The poll is not accurate or fair, as several airplane types listed had different missions. For example, the He 112B fighter/bomber could not do what the I.A.R. 37/38/39 family of observation/intelligence gathering aircraft did and vice versa.
I suggest mentioning the type of mission certain aircraft types were doing, namely: best fighter, bomber, recce, etc. Even so, such polls are not very 'scientifical', they serve the purpose of having fun only. Dénes |

I realize that, but I don't want to make many polls for each category of aircraft. I simply wanted to know which Aircraft had the biggest impact on the war.
As Fighter, there's little doub the the Me109 was romania's most successfull fighter. I'm interested in bombers, and know which of the major ones.. He111, Ju88, Ju87 Stuka or the ground attack Hs129 proved most successfull in the hands of the ARR pilots. |

As Denes mentioned, the poll is not accuarte !
But thinking what airplane proved to be most successfull in the hand of Romanian pilots, I thik it was Hs-129. |

Well, we got over 200 of those. The large number of these aircraft, the Hs129 which Romania used more then any other country other then germany might explain the successes. Maybe the IAR-81 proved more successfull for the small number of them we had - if you put it that way. |

Certainly, Hs 129 caused more important effects in fights.
- fighter aircrafts - not much of them; 80/81 obsolete from 42'-43'; E & G (Me-109) surclased in number (Eastern and Home fronts). Victorys were achieved only because pilots were good. - bombers like Savoia - inferior versus quality of bombers introduced in conflict curse; - Heinkel 111 and Ju-88, good bombers. Too small numbers for area of front. - IAR 3x and Blenheim - maybe second top place is for this planes; - He-112 - a complex aircraft, inferior to "E" (we have "E" in 3 to 1 He-112 ?) - Hurricane - same problem - small no. like He-112, whith a "minus in plus" -> insuficient spare ( asa se spune la piese de schimb?) parts and engines, no 20 m.m., or heavy MG - PZL - 3'rd place, on the same place whith Nardis, and some PWS, for pilots training; - Ju-87 - his entry time in ARR whas too late, and too late for his performances; And... the winner, HS 129, because is only aircraft in large no. whith succes in his action - a "terror from above" for adversaries on ground level! My brain is burning. Too much thinking in english ... :ro: :keep: |

1. BF-109G- shoot down the most aircraft, was used by most of Romania's top Aces such as Serbanescu and Cantacuzino, was the most effective fighter in the Romanian Air Force and the only one that could down the potent P-51B/D Mustang!
2. HS-129- proved to the most effective ground attack aircraft in the Romanian Air Force, Destroyed a great number of Soviet Tanks! The havoc that Romanian HS-129 inflicted on the Red Army was so great, that even after Romania change sides Russian Anti-Aircraft Guns continued to fire the HS-129's. 3. IAR-80/81- workhorse fighter of the Romania Air Force, Fought well against the Red Air Force and more potent United States Air Force, on one occaision shoot down as many as 23 P-38 lightings, for loss of only 1 IAR-80. The IAR-80/81 was also an effective ground support aircraft. 4. JU-87D- extremly effective tank-buster and ground support aircraft, a close second to the HS-129 5. Hawker Hurricane MK.1- most effect Fighter during the 1941 campaign, one squadron shoot down as least 60 emeny aircraft! One piloted by Horia Agarici downed 3 Soveit bombers that were trying to bomb the Romanian fleet. |

They claimed 23 P-38s on 10 June 1944, which does not mean they actually shot down 23. The subject has been discussed several times on the forum. FOur IAR-80s were lost and several other were damaged in that dogfight.
Not 60. IIRC the figure given in cpt. av. Emil Georgescu's (53rd Squadron's CO) citation for the Miahi Viteazul Order there were only 35 claims. |

Just to tell hello and that i'm not dead but far from any net i answered the Bf 109. Maybe because it was one of the most famous of those planes and also it was appreciated by its pilots who made many exploits with it.
Always yours, Bm |

Artur, The Gustavs achieved the most victorys of any fighter in the ARR. It was also the only fighter in the Romania invertory that could take on a P-51 Mustang. Romania's top aces scored most of their victories on the Me-109G. If Romania had more of these excellent fighters it would have downed many more emeny aircraft! Thank You |

Stephen, of course the Gustavs did the most damage to the Allies. What I was wondering is if it was possible to track down the airframe numbers, camouflage, coding and pilots who flew the top-scoring Romanian Messerchmitt. Anotherwords which particular Messerschmitt shot down the most planes in the War.

If we consider the ARR air victories and not the actual number of aircraft shot down, the I.A.R. 80/81s might have been more successful, as in 1944 they engaged mostly four-engine USAAF bombers. Thus if one such bomber was shot down or damaged, the pilot received 3 victories. Lt. Col. Dénes |
