Today at 17:44, during a training flight, two MiG-21 Lancers have collided in mid-air near Cristesti. One fell in Cristesti and the other in Santioana. Both pilots bailed out and are all right (one of them has been lightly injured). Two men and a little girl were also injured and several houses suffered some damage.

I'm so thankful no one died.
Is there any idea what might have caused this to happin?.
I know here where I live in we had to F-18's collide over the river.
This happaned about a month ago. It was a training flight as well.
There was a two seat F-18 and a a single seat F-18. The pilot in the single seat F-18 died. Also one of the other pilots ( I think it was the RIO) in the two seat model died.

Wrecks of one of the crashed MiG-21s (source '24 de ore muresene'): user posted image

A four-digit number is visible among the wreckage. Would this be the aircraft's serial number?

Here is the complete article:
http://www.24oremuresene.ro/produs.php?id=...bd2c3768624abfe

The owner of the house lot the MiG-21 crashed into was exactly at the (outdoors) toilet, when the aircraft fell from the sky (Jakab Sándor of Sîntioana/Szászszentiván survived the impact). I could imagine how surprised he was (what are the chances of this to happen?)

Apparently it was a pilot error. There were 3 MiGs: one "hostile intruder" and two "pursuiers". They had to intercept him and then escort him out of te harea. At least that was what they were supposed to do. Apparently the hostile and one pursuier got too close and hit each over. Then the aircraft went out of control and crashed. One blowing off that guy on the toillete and the other falling on a garage and wounding the little girl.

Denes, yes, that is the serial number.

So, apparently it was a human error after all.
Reportedly, it's the 30th and 31st Rumanian MiG-21 that crashed from 1990 on.

News from the local radion station (in Rumanian):

Motivul prabusirii celor 2 MIG-uri se va cunoaste peste o luna (8/31/2004)

Raportul final al anchetei in cazul accidentului aviatic soldat cu prabusirea a doua aeronave MIG-21 Lancer in judetul Mures urmeaza sa fie prezentat in circa 30 de zile.

A huge disaster that could have wiped out half of Tg.Mures...

I don't know who had the idea of the title, but considering the size of Tg. Mures, it is a gross miss-estimation.

Also... Such events happen everywhere, but not quite often, I have to accept.
Do you remember the rescue attempt by the American commandos, during president Carter, to save the Americans kept prisoners in Teheran, Iran?
The main reason of that failure was the "contact" in air of 2 American helicopters carrying the commandos, which resulted in their collapse.

Also, in the last war with Iraq, 2 of the few Allied casualties in air were a pair of British jets which performed a French kiss in the air.

The reporter refers to the fact that large pieces of wreckage were found inside the local Chemical Plant (the infamous Azomures, which often emitted yellow and stinky gasses I dully breath), very close to the ammonia storage tanks. If those tanks would have exploded, large parts of the city - my city of birth, BTW -would have been devastated.

Apparently the pilots did not respect the flight path, which was several km distance from the plant.
