Jurnalul Naţional has published today an article about the life of Ioan Caruntu, a pilot of the 17th Observation Squadron. The article is available in Romanian only.

Obviously the author of the article did not really know what she was writing about. Odessa was taken in October, not September. There was some success in the Dalnik sector, but I would not call it a major brakethrough. It was more like a WWI style advance.
I wonder how he took the pictures, if tehre was no observer on board the aircraft. |

Or maybe the pilot's recollections of the events that have happened more than 60 years ago were not as accurate as one has hoped. |

That crossed my mind, too. I have never seen a combat report filed by I.A.R. 39 crews, or accident/loss report, where there was no on-board observer. |

I heard that the decision to refuse the german support in man and war material at the begining of the siege of Odessa was taken by Antonescu after he saw some aerial photos. He concludet that Odessa is not really fortified...
