The two types are very similar, but as you can see from the enhanced picture, the Audi emblem is clearly visible.

In 1985 to be more exact.

In 1932 Auto Union was created as a joined venture between Horch, Audi, DKW and Wanderer (I think now that the car posted by Cantacuzino is in fact a car built in two factories under different names: Audi 920 and Wanderer W23) after the war (1964) Auto Union name was dropped and the name used was "Audi NSU Auto-Union AG" until 1985 when it was changed to "Audi AG".

Hello again Gentlemen:

Yes, Auto Union was formed with DKW, Audi, Wander and Horch.

The emblem mentioned here was seen on every frontal photo that I have of the first three cars but not Horch. I assume as Horch was their luxury brand. It was three rings that I have always assumed meant the union of the first three companies.

As to the photo in question, not to start any argument, but the grille on the Audi had horizontal bars and on the Wanderer they were vertical. The Audi grille was more or less straight on the edges from top to bottom, the Wanderer had a slight but noticeable inward curve as it came to the bottom. The Audi hood/bonnet had a very different appearance where it mated with the top of the grille. On the Wanderer it has a very distinctive clamshell mating. Hard to describe but you can see the difference in photos of the two cars.

I still believe the car here is a Wanderer.

The things seem to be a bit more complex, as you can see below. The name Audi appeared in 1909-1910 (as a name for a car manufacturing company and for its products) and was used until WW 2, to start again being used in 1965. Sorry, the text is available in Romanian only. Source: the official Audi motor company (Romanian branch) website, http://www.audi.ro/historie.php

Solutia problemei: traducerea numelui sau ("horch"= asculta, auzi) in latina ("audi").

"1985 Audi NSU Auto Union AG devine AUDI AG.

I would like to correct my earlier post.
The Auto Union badge has 4 not 3 rings, thus representing all four companies.
Also, further book and photo research shows that many but not all Horch photos I found last night also had the Auto Union badge.
Sorry for my mis-information but I think I have it correct now.
