Are the photos. of the AA trucks pre-war? I see roundels on the doors and the trucks seem to be in a French or Czech style camoflage. Are the AA guns 13mm Hotchkiss? Thanks.

A photo I've just bought today. A Praga RV in Botosani 1941.

Is the truck shown in this photo a Rumanian one? The town doesn't look like a typical city in Rumania.

Hi Denes:
Goodness, I thought this thread had died and gone to heaven. I am no good at European locales outside of Scandinavia but the truck seems to be an Opel 1 tonner as an ambulance. Nice photo in any case Bill |

Hi 109:
Two nice shots of the 1937 American style Ford, these on the shorter wheelbase. You saw very few of these in prewar Europe but Rumania seems to have gotten a fair number of them. I have a Wheels & Tracks magazine at the house I will look at tonight that had an article on Rumanian trucks and particularly these 1937 models. If the photos are usable I will try to scan them in here. Bill |

In the pre war era there was a Ford assembly plant in Romania so there were lots of Ford cars and trucks in Romania during WWII. The plant stopped produced when Romania entered the war and no more parts were sent and production stopped.
I have a maintenance manual for cars and trucks made by Ford it's made especially for Romania (it has drawings featuring trucks with Romanian soldiers), printed in Romania in 1940. Unfortunately my father took care of it when he was a child so the first 12 pages and page 41 are missing also he added some color to the drawings... |

I read that over 2,000 Ford trucks were produced during the war! We have heard two different things here Mihnea!

I haven't heard anything, I have read about the Ford trucks assembled in Romania in Mark Axworthy's book "Third axis fourth ally " in the chapter "The build-up to war" quote: "At the outbreak of war assembly virtually ceased, and Ford Romania thereafter provided mostly repair and maintenance facilities." |

I liked this vehicle too, and managed to "squeeze" a bit of my camera arm in there for a shot of the workspace in the rear. What is just out of view to the extreme left in this shot is a drill press, one of the items for which that generator on the trailer came in handy. The two pictures from the bottom of the first page of this topic (the AA trucks) were taken at 10 May 1940, at the National Day military parade. See also here: http://anr.infoideea.ro/basarabia1940/page8.html |

I would be interested in any response to the first part of Iama's question- what are the AA machine guns on the Ford trucks?
I'm reasonably sure they are some of the Hotchkiss 13mm's bought from France before the war. Both the 13 and 25mm Hotchkiss AA were available as twin-mounts, but I have never seen information as to how many of the guns purchased by Romania were of that type. Does any one know? Thanks, Jim R. |
