First, this topic doesn't belong to this chapter, as it has nothing to do with ARR.
Second, such sensible topics, like shooting on civilians, or on defenseless airmen on parachute, or war crimes in general, mostly degenerates, or is being pushed into a flame war (like the latest one: http://www.worldwar2.ro/forum/index.php?showtopic=122 or a previous one: http://www.worldwar2.ro/forum/index.php?showtopic=329). Therefore great care should be taken when opening such a discussion. All such claims should be backed-up with sources, not like "I've heard that..." Now, returning to your original question, yes, there are Rumanian reports that mention civilians and farm animals were hit on ground on June 10, 1944 by USAAF pilots, but it's not clear if it was intentional or not. Presumably, there were cases of deliberate targeting of individual civilians, but those were the exceptions rather than the norm. Gen. "Branesti commune: 1 dead, 1 wounded, machinegunned from plane Plataresti: 1 dead, 1 wounded, machinegunned from plane Cretesti: 1 dead, 2 wounded, machinegunned from plane..." Because in that area, nearly Popesti-Leordeni",the dogfights between Gr.6 Vt. & Lightnings was at very low altitude ,we can talk about accidentally firing over civilian population. |

If the Gherghani rail station was attacked -military train it was a legitimate target for the americans. They considerate oficials buidings, oficials vehicles imortant and legitimate target. Locomotive were a important target on their list even that the train many time were civilan. There were ocasion when civil trains- pasager trains from the rute Bucharest-Ploiesti or Bucharest-Pitesti were strafed by the americans most likely in order to destroy the locomotive even that means to destoied the railwagons all so . Americans in general were more triger happy boys the others -then the british. I now a case where in Romania in wich a american pilot whent like mad to destroy the locomotive of a train , again and again until the locomotive mecanic put a heavy smoke making the pilot think that the engine was destroed.
Regarding the cases of civilian killed on 10 june 44 I think that each cases must if possible investigated separat. I,m dobt that most of the civian were killed on purpose most probaly the guys were on the wrong place at the wrong time. |
