Production of 40 mm Bofors guns in Poland Thank you Woj! Did Starachowice and Rzeszow both have complete production facilities or were they cooperating together as one production line? The first Bofors-producing factory the Germans got hold of was Österreichische Staatsfabrik in Austria. This factory was however changed to make German 37 mm AA guns. The Germans bought license rights in 1943 for 500.000 SEK and started making Bofors-guns in Kongsberg, Norway. This factory was blown up on 16th September 1944 by SOE-agent Gunnar Sonstebye. Starachowice and Rzeszow had both complete production facilities. Of course, there were a lot of other manufacturers in co-operation network (if you are interested in the full list, I can continue my research, but travel to Starachowice archive would be needed in this case). I have found some additional data concerning Starachowice factory during war years, just an hour ago. According to these new information - there were no any guns production in Starachowice - only ammunition from 37 mm to 152 mm was produced. Construction Bureau didn't exist, because shortage of Polish engineers. Polish workers damaged most of machine tools in the first days of September 1939 - just before arrival of German troops. Production was re-establihed from 5 December 1939 by cpt. Teimann (OKW). In January 1943 in Starachowice factory (Hermann Goering Werke) worked: - 11 273 Polish workers, - 1900 Polish mechanics and officials, - 251 Germans, - 1533 Jews, as slave labourers (see mention: http://www.cjnews.com/pastIssues/99/oct21-99/front1.htm ) under director Fritz Hoffmann control.
