Hello all, I just stumbled upon a small but very interesting detail in a site devoted to the history of Latvian aviation up to the Soviet annexation (1918 - 1940), at http://latvianaviation.com/index.html In the section nammed "Questions", viewable at http://latvianaviation.com/Questions.html there's a mention about a very obscure but nevertheless curious episode related to the Irbitis I-12 trainer, which ocurred after the German occupation:

I know that particular photo. Besides the ex-Latvian I-12, a Rumanian Fleet F-10G airplane can be seen.
It's quite possible that both aircraft were used as courier airplanes and met each other, by accident, somewhere on the Southern Front (or even Rumania, too). I doubt a Fleet would venture up north, to Latvia. Col. Dénes This post has been edited by Dénes on December 11, 2004 03:43 pm |

So the Romanian aircraft is a Fleet F-10G... I agree. It is indeed unlikely that the little trainer was photographed so up North.

Thanks Dénes! This is one of the books I have in my "shopping list", but I am afraid it might out of print by now. I will try to get it anyway.
As for the photo itself, I got a low res copy from Mr. Gunars David Zolis. Unfortunately, he also forgot where he saw it... probably also "somewhere on the net". But the bleak landscape and the flat, endless steppe are a good indication that the photo might well have been taken in the Southern Front. Ruy |
