Unlike Romania, Ukraine already held elections in October this year.
What do you know about the new leader? Average nationalist or ultra-nationalist? |

There was no leader elected yet. There will be a second turn held shortly between the two front runners. One reportedly is pro-Western, while the other one pro-Russian. They are currently neck to neck, the nation being evently split. Interesting and familiar situation... Lt. Col. Dénes This post has been edited by Dénes on November 14, 2004 06:10 am |

I believe they are neck-to-neck mostly because the present prime-minister and friend of Kuchma benefited from a serious fraud. Otherwise, the opposition leader would have been in the first place. Hopefully he will win.

From what I remember reading in a narticle translated from an Ukrainian newspaper, their Danube military fleet is smaller and have no modern monitors.

And another article in our press - Jurnalul: http://www.jurnalul.ro/modules.php?op=modl...=18570&topic=32 And a fragment: "IMPACT TRANSFRONTALIER. "Autoritatile ucrainene ar fi trebuit sa ia in considerare recomandarile comunitatii internationale in vederea limitarii impactului negativ asupra ecosistemului Deltei Dunarii. In plus, Ucraina ar trebui sa implice tara noastra in evaluarea impactului de mediu a proiectului, in ansamblu. " |

Our dear Ukrainean neibours/comerades belive that they can do what they bloody like and don't give a dam about any contract or diplomatic agreement that they had just signed. The Minister of Foreign Affaires has done just about everything that he could. Even the President has spoken a lot of times on this mather. On one declaration which I loved completely he said that there is no cause of open war with Ukraine. This is why the Frontier Police and the Danube Military Navy Flotilla are on the look-out. And let us not forget the Rostov case. Rostov is a ship that sank on the Sulina chanel (the only properly navigable chanel in the Delta) some 13 years ago nearly bloking it. Interesting how it sank just when another atemt of Ukraine to form a chanel just succeded. But their atemt soon found an end because of the natural process of colmatation that blocked it. Event today the Sulina Chanel bottom is being draged safely and not disturbing the enviroment so much as Bîrstoe. And let us not forget that the Delta is declared the largest Biosfera reservation in Europe and it is unique in the world.
You figure out the politics of this one because I as a Romanian am sick of them. And another thing, when this scandall started there was a great NATO summit at Poiana Braşov, extremelly well defended. Do you think that they discussed only what they gave to the press?!?!?!?!?!?! Since I became aware about the political fight in Kiev regarding the recent contested elections, I realized that it is a matter which in a way will affect also Romania. So I am really interested in the turnout.
Sadly, I learned today from BBC that some electoral problems were also in Romania, and the elections are also contested there. Until all this electoral boiling will cool down, I think on our behalf we should cool down with "Ukraine vs. Romania" topic. It is just a suggestion. No offense intended. News - according to Associated Press:
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday warned that Ukraine's crisis over last week's disputed presidential election must be solved without foreign pressure - even as European envoys returned to Kiev for a second round of mediation. While it was delivered in a phone call with the German chancellor, Putin's message appeared aimed more at the United States, seen by the Kremlin as behind a campaign to install Ukraine's pro-Western opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko at the helm of the nation Russia has always regarded as its main satellite. The former Soviet republic of 48 million has emerged at the center of arguably the biggest direct geopolitical confrontation between Moscow and the United States and its Western allies since the late 1980s, when Eastern Europe was still firmly in the embrace of the Communist empire but struggling to break out. "Putin is being told by his advisers and allies that for a long time, the West has been actively interfering in Ukraine and Yushchenko as a politician is a purely American project," said Fyodor Lukyanov, editor of a leading Russian foreign affairs journal. "He's told that the whole campaign is being run on ... mostly American, money, and if Yushchenko wins Ukraine will sharply change its political orientation - quickly joining NATO, trying to rupture its ties with Russia and so on." The United States and other Western nations have agreed with Yushchenko that the Nov. 21 runoff vote was marred by massive fraud. Putin told German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Tuesday that "an exit from the crisis should be found in a democratic way, that is, on the basis of observing the law and not under external or internal pressure based on political passions," the Kremlin said in a press release. The Russian leader has staked his personal and political reputation on Yushchenko's rival and the declared victor, Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, traveling to Ukraine twice to appear by his side during the election campaign. Putin also was the first foreign leader - and one of a very small club - to congratulate Yanukovych on his victory even as the opposition and foreign observers cried fraud. |

"UCIS IN NAVA ROSTOK
