Hello everybody!
We are organizing a commemoration of the end of the war in Hungary on the 16th April in Budapest. There will be a few speeches, some from surviving war veterans, soldiers in contemporary uniforms will appear, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier will be wreathed. It is not organized by any party or organization, just a private initiative. We would like to remember the war as it happened, as a historic event, without any political meaning. We expect some 5-600 people to show up, and some media coverage. During this commemoration we will play some songs of all the armies that took part in the fight in Hungary: that is Hungary, Germany, Soviet Union, United Kingdom, United States and as you know, Romania. However, it's next to impossible to find Romanian army songs here. Could you please recommend us a fitting song? Preferably something about the memory of fallen comrades. Also an MP3 file would be helpful. By the way, if you wish, you can also come to the event. We will have some guys in Hungarian, German and Russian uniforms, but none in Romanian. If any of you wishes to add this little extra, we'd warmly welcome! Regards, Tamas Polgar Budapest |

Tamás, besides Rumanian, don't forget Bulgarian and Tito's Yugoslavian soldiers, too...
BTW, AFAIK the last piece of Hungarian land was occupied on April 12, 1945, not 16 (and definitely not 4 ). Dénes This post has been edited by Dénes on February 22, 2005 10:54 pm |

A song such as ""Victoria si Gloria"" but definately not one like "Dac'am plecat ardealule din tine", or "Treceti batalioane romane carpatii". - You don't want a start a new war over there - It's a sensitive topic - I don't know how Hungarian war veterans would react to Romanian war songs being sung, especially not the last ones i mentioned above. Dac'am plecat ardealule din tine is a very nice song actually. It was composed after the seizure of Nord ardeal. They were singing this when the army was fighting west against to regain it. Der Maresal, if "Treceti batalioane romane Carpatii" are singed by O-Zone, maybe it will have a different impact.
Iama, thinking about new No. 1 hit of O-zone... |

Thanks for the replies. Meanwhile I did my own search, and settled to 'Imnul Eroilor'. Do you think it's fitting? For the Germans we play 'Ich hatt eine Kameraden' (I had a comrade), for the Russians 'Vy shertvoju pali' (You've fallen victims), for the Americans 'Taps' (the general US military funeral music). For the Hungarians and the British we've not picked any songs, but in the days ahead we will.
The commemoration is held on 16th simply because that's Saturday. Yes, that's right, the war has not ended here on 4th April, but sometime between 12th and 16th. For Tito's partisans, well, you're right! If we consider the retaken territories as Hungarian - as they legally were - then it's right, we have to play Yugoslavian partisan songs too. Meanwhile we're arranging things, seems we will have some contemporary vehicles and uniforms. They have American, German, Russian and Hungarian equipment. Still, won't anybody come from Romania? |

"Presarati pe a lor morminte" - an serious answer from me, this time. I think is one of the most apropriate song for commemoration of heroes. Anyone could translate some?
