The source (quoted above) mentioned something like "Stinger-type missles"... |

Why is it failed? Note that those governments could have axed it because they already had systems with a similar function and simply didnt need this one. If you have 100s of Apaches and M1s and have air superiority, why would you need ADATS anymore? -------------------- I

Actually I think we had (and still have) the ZIS - The Soviet equivalent, with 4x23 mm (and possibly the 2x57mm type, but I'm not sure about that) AA guns. At a certain point, a few years ago, there were rumors that they will go through a modernization program, but I haven't heard anything since then... Failed as in failed to meet requirement of cost and failed to enter in service
What ever you like. Well depend on what type of warefare you envision using it. If you use it in the current type of conflict US is involved then you don't need any kind of AA defence. About the Gepard, I think the projectile measuring system is installed. Is kind of nonsense that with Rapid reaction force... Including in rapid reaction force a 40t Tank that is not aerotransportable. |

Can the Gepard engage ground targets as well? I've seen a documentary which also featured the Gepard, but I dont remember exactly. On his specs I've seen only AA capability. thanx -------------------- I

According to the specifications presented in "Top Gun" magazine, the projectile reserve for the Gepard included classical AP/HE rounds, destined for engaging ground targets. |

I must disagree with you here... The Romanian FRR was designed to be the first concrete result of the modernization process involving the Romanian army - as the best trained, equipped and readily to get into action in case of aggression (to react, to response - hence FRR) inter-arms section, an elite core or an army within the army. The second requirement was that of interoperability with the NATO. It is not destined for any large-scale intervention&deployment abroad, since such a thing would be beyond the scope and possibilities of the Romanian army, it’s main task being the defense of the national territory. Of course as a result of it’s higher fighting capacity, the units involved in international operations are components of FRR. This post has been edited by Agarici on May 20, 2005 04:14 pm |

I didn't find yet a source to say about Romania to have ZSU-23 or 57. But, at a momment i heard about a prototype of two tubes AAA * 57 m.m., who - i think - was abandoned. But this was not a self propelled 2*57.

An interesting article about Moreni factory and romanian TABs. An alarm signal about romanian type of deals and about the recent event in Afganistan were one of our TAB was destroyed by a bomb. Unfortunately is only in romanian language. I did'nd know about the ex. Varsovia Threaty standards on armour protection... Iama |

20 defective ‘Piranha’ AAPCs delivered to Romania
Approximately 20 ‘Piranha’ Amphibious Armored Personnel Carriers have already been delivered to Romania, but some ‘shortcomings’ have been identified during the technical evaluations, shortcomings that are set to be fixed by the producer, Corneliu Dobritoiu, secretary of state within the Ministry of Defence, has stated on Wednesday. The AAPCs are currently undergoing technical tests that include live firing. At least ten other vehicles of the same type are due to be delivered to Romania by the end of the year. http://www.nineoclock.ro/index.php?page=de...d=20080515-8892 -------------------- I

The SAUR has been shown at EXPOMIL 2007 last autumn, and performed a demo in the Mihai Bravu range.
You can see it here: http://www.mapn.ro/fotodb/20071018_2 incorrectly labeled as Zimbru. Apparently it has a remote operated mini-turret with a .50 cal machine gun, similar to the one on the new Pirnhas. As far as i know, it is still in the contest for the new APC of our army, just like the RN-94 - also to be seen in the album from the link above. The aquisition of the 31 Piranhas is just a stopgap measure for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan - but this one is also in the competition for the bigger order. |

I don't think it's just a stopgap measure, the contract has been signed and the 31 units were just a first batch out of 600 set to be delivered. They will replace the TABs. Controversial contract to replace AAPCs with Piranha IFVs The overall contract has a value of EUR 1 bln, of which a first payment of EUR 60 M has already been made. The goal of the contract is the acquisition of 600 MOWAG infantry fighting vehicles. http://www.nineoclock.ro/index.php?page=de...d=20080611-9057 -------------------- I

I have seen the AFV in my initial post on Iuliu Maniu Boulevard a week ago!
Now that's a good solution for driving in Bucharest. let's see someone try to cut in front of it. |
