In 1944, the 4th Parachute Battalion (Companies 1-7), which was raised by the Air Force and wore uniforms of the same color blue and rank as the Air Force, was expanded with several more companies from the Army. It comprised of the 8th and 9th Infantry Companies, 10th Support Weapons Company, 11th HQ Company and a Depot Company. Does anyone know who was the Commanding or ranking Army officer in charge of the Army contingincy of this Battalion? I am researching an Army Colonels uniform with Paratroop Insignia on it.

I have read long time ago about this unit in action in Bucharest region. It was a story, in a pre '89 book. I have to look in my books, and if i found, i post some info - if it is important (name of commander, for example)

How elite were these paratroops? Could they match the Germans paratroops?

It is hard to say. The 4th Paratrooper Battalion only saw action in the days after 23 August 1944 in the fights around Bucharest, especially in the Baneasa forest. They did confront German paratroopers and annihilated them, but we must take into consideration the fact that the Romanians were on the defense and that generally the Germans were taken out just after their aircraft had just landed and did not have enough time to deploy properly.
The paratroopers were an elite, as they were carefully picked and trained, but they had a short combat record, being disbanded afterwards at the Soviet request. |

Why did the Soviets ask to disband the paratroopers ? Was is part of Soviet security requirements to disband elite formations in occupied countries ?

The goal was to totally destroy the Royal Army and create the new People's Army. The elite formations were top on tehir list. After the war the mountain troops were disbanded, being reformed some years later. |

The soviets disbanded after 1945 all elite category of romanian army - the paratropers, the mountain divisions and the jandarmers. The jandarmers became the "Securitate" troops but they maintained the traditionaly high level of trainig. For eg, my wife grandpa was professional jandarm NCO before war, he was enroled in the 3rd mountain division during the WW2, after the war he served again in the jandarmers corp, and he was mentained in the securitate troops till in 1952 when he was fired (the communists don t need an old royal style NCO, they already have theyr party members). The paratrops units was formed again in the later '50 (am I right?) ... |
