Can anyone help me with details and photos on Erich Hartmann detachment to Roumania ? where was he stationed in Boucharest ? Any photos and memoires? From Boucharest he shot down 5 P-51's and 2 Liberators over Roumania but where ? and damaged several other 8th AF Bombers ..I have some gun camera photos though on his bio there are no details in depth about his squadron location and photos .

Any help will be appreciated

9./JG 52 operated from Husi airfield, not Bucharest. The P-51s belonged to the 15th Air Force, stationed in Italy. The 8th AF was in the UK and a flight all the way to Romania from there was impossible.

Many thanks, though if I am not wrong even the P-51's and P-38 stationed in Foggia were part of the mighty 8th air force isnt? I knew that the escort fighters would have never made it from sofar

Thanks

It seems I didn 't consider the indirect route through Italy.

I suppose that the Zarnesti mentioned above is not the one near Rasnov or is it?
I remember Dobran mentioned seeing Hartmann on Husi, but then again that airfield was a secondary one, used for temporary deployments IIRC.

Hello Victor

I met Eric Hartman in 1992 a year prior his death at Weil Im Schoenenbuch in Baden Wuertunberg which is just 2 1/2 drive from Basel Switzerland where I live ......he mentioned little about the time he was in Roumania , how long he was there what airfiled and where did he live as well the pilots he met from ARR ...he spoke mostly about his time he spent in Russia with JG52 and his detention overthere which seems to have followed him though the death....I have been in touch with other JG52 who were in Roumania and little or nothing at all I could find about Erics Roumania time who was the greastest fighter pilot of all times, may his memories be blessed

Best Wishes
Aleex

Howdy Denes

The guy who just posted the message is dumn right. At least 5 P-51's were shot down and several Liberators ...what has transpired to them ? Finally it looks that the Russians attacked Roumanian territory on constant basis mostly with P-39's .....are there any photos available of his airkills in Roumania specifically P-39's which is a wonderful futuristic like type plane...? I have a photo from Erich which shows an IL-2 shot down near Iasi and pilot managed to perform a weels-up landing..do u wana see it ?

Let me Know

Cheers
Alex

The above air victories are taken from official Luftwaffe documents.
I found no trace of other USAAF kills in the period Hartmann was stationed in Rumania in 1944.

As for the belly landed Il-2 near Yassy (Iasi) in 1944, if it's a private photo then yes, I'd like to see it. If it's a PK photo, then I think I know which one it is. By any chance, is a young Rumanian shepherd standing near the airplane, seen from 1 o'clock?
