In WW1 Romanian uniforms were a gray-blue colour, similar to the early Austro-Hungarian Hechtgrau and to the French Bleu Horizon.
When did Romanian uniforms switch from gray-blue to khaki? In the inter war years? In WW2 they were using this colour. Were there never problems of so called "friendly fire" on the Eastern front, due to the fact that Romanian uniforms were similar in colour to the Soviet ones. I suppose that in this case the distinctive Romanian helmet would have been very usefull. There's such a case in the italian book "Il sergente nella neve", by Mario Rigoni Stern, a seargent of the Julia division of the Alpini, the Italian mountain troops, when, during the retreat from the Don he and his soldiers are about to open fire on some khaki uniformed soldiers, thinkig they were Soviets, but then they stopped having realized they were Romanians.

Period photos from 1941 and 1942 show that many Rumanian soldiers wore a yellow armband for Axis identification purposes.
