I have added more units discovered in the 2nd and 282nd Mechanized Brigades.

There is also the problem of the brigade to which the 300th Mechanized Infantry Battalion belongs to.

The 317th Marine Battalion it's more like a penal battalion of the Navy. A question tghou, are the tank battalions called like this, or is it "artilerie grea"?

I am not sure I understand your question. The xth Tank Battalion is a translation of Batalionul x Tancuri. Why would a tank battalion be called heavy artillery?

It seems the 300th Battalion is part of the 282nd Brigade.

I have identified the 17th and 24th Mountain Batalions as part of the 61st Mountain Brigade.

This is all useful and detailed information, but I was also curious about the higher-level structure.
I found a diagram on the MAPN site, and it seems that the the 2 remaining armies from the end of WWII (1st and 4th) have been re-designated as Army Corps.

Thus, from an organizational standpoint, the Romanian ground forces are now composed of 3 main structures:

1st Army Corps, based in Bucuresti
4th Army Corps, based in Cluj
Comandament "Garzi", based in Bucuresti

No other corps-level structures are present for ground forces. Please see diagram included below:

I'm not the one to practice 'bumping' month-old threads forward, but it just so happens I'm interested in the structure of Romanian battalions/companies as well.

I've been dabbling around with Steel Panthers (Main Battle Tank, the modern series) and The Operation Art of War III scenario editing, and I'd apreciate it if anyone provided some info on this.

Thanks in advance.

Have all divisional commands been eliminated? The diagrams and lists I've seen all seem to go from Army Corps to Brigade level.

Second question: Any remaining links between historical units and current units, or has everything been completely restructured?

In other words, can one trace the 1st Armored Division (Romania Mare), or the 8th Cavalry Division, to modern-day counterparts (albeit carrying different names)? Or has the reorganization been so complete that all links to the past have been lost?

Hello, neighbours!
I am looking for some information about the structure of the romanian armed forces of today and from the recent past. I hope you could help me. Of course I have seen the orbat at wikipedia. It is pretty good. However I still have many questions:

- I know that the main formations of the land forces are the 1st, 2nd and 4th divisions. Before the formation of the 2nd division the 1st had 27 and 4th had 20 mobilization centres. Did some of them transfer to the 2nd division, or did it form mobilization structures of its own?

- Is there still distinction between operational, territorial and combined brigades and what is the difference? Does territorial mean reserve personnel, or des it mean not deployable overseas?

- Which battalions fall under the Comandamentul din Garnizoana Bucuresti and which Major-General is the garrison commander? The Chief of the land forces?

- So you have under the land forces the 1st, 2nd, 4th division, the training command, the Bucuresti Garrison, the SF, LAROM and Geniu brigades. Does the Comandamentul Logistic Întrunit also fall under the land forces or under the MApN and what is its structure? Which rank does the commanding officer have, what manpower and which units?

- How is the signals arm structured? I have read, that the former government signals arms of the Securitatea was transformed into an independent militarised service under government control. Is this service still operational, or has it been merged with the Comandamentul Comunicaţiilor şi Informaticii? Do the land forces, the air force and the navy have their own signals units, or are all the signals units part of that command?

- There is some scarce information, that the Romanian Military Police includes 4 MP battalions, but that's about it. I know there is the elite 265th MP Battalion under the land forces and an MP battalion under the guards regiment of the 1st division. What are the other two MP battalions, do they fall under the air force and navy respectively, or are the 4 battalions under direct MApN control? Are there any other MP units, such as MP companies, criminal investigation units, support centres etc? Are the Israely Wolf armoured cars part of the 265th MP Bn? For example our Bulgarian Military Police is a service under direct MoD control and it includes:
o 5 territorial MP districts, each commanded by a colonel
o Criminal Investigations Division
o operational MP company with 14 Plasan Sand Cat MRAV's
o Training and Logistical Center of the Military Police
In addition to these units according to our current transformation plan the armed forces are also forming:
o two land forces MP companies under each of the two mechanised brigades
o an air force MP company
o a naval MP company

- So the unconventional units of the land forces include the 3 battalions of the 6th Special Forces Brigade and a Batalionul Cercetare for each of the 3 divisions. Are there still parasutisti units in the divisions, at least parasutisti companies in some of the infantry battalions? The navy has the Scafandri frogmen center and the 307th Marines Battalion as a naval equivalent of the cercetare battalions of the army. Do the air force, the military police and the Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff have their own special forces?

- Do the Romanian land forces plan to acquire UAVs?

- The artillery includes the LAROM brigade under the Land Forces Staff and an artillery regiment for each of the three divisions. Or does the 2nd division lack an artillery formation? Does the Romanian army have operational self-propelled field artillery, how many units and which systems?

- About the land forces air defence - do the batalionul antiaeriana units of the army brigades include only ZU-23 and MANPADS, or do they also include self-propelled CA-95, Oerlikon guns? What is the structure of the air defence regiments of the divisions? They include Russian KUB and OSA SAM's and Gepard SPAAG's. How are the battalions structured? Do they also have Hawk XXI batteries, how many? Do they also include CA-95s, CA-94s, Oerlikon guns? Is there an air defence regiment under direct Land Forces Staff control, or only those 3 regiments?

- What is the structure of the ground based air defences of the Fortele Aeriene? I know that the Brigada 1 de Rachete Sol-Aer includes 4 batteries of S-75M3? Are these all the operational S-75s of Romania? Does the brigade also have Hawk XXI batteries? Is the Regimentul 11 de Rachete Sol-Aer "Horea" still operational? Is it independent, or is it part of the Brigada 1 RSA? What is its structure, does it also have S-75 or only Hawk XXIs?

- I have read that there are about 50 operational LanceRs. Is this info correct, because this is too few for 6 operational squadrons?

- What is the situation with the An-2, are they withdrawn? How many and which modification are the operational Yak-52s? Are the operational IAR-316B's only 6 and what happened to the plans to replace them with the EC-635? Do you still have Mi-8s or Aerospatiale Dauphins in the fleet?

- Is the information about 22 operational IAR-330 SOCAT and 35 operational IAR-330M accurate?

- Which is the unit, that operates the Shadow 600 UAVs out of Timisoara-Giarmata? Does it have an official name like for example Escadrila 38 de Recunoastere or is it just called Escadrila Shadow 600 and does it fall under an annex of a Baza Aeriana or is it under Air Force HQ?

- Is the whole naval aviation composed of only the three IAR-330 Naval, or does the navy still have some IAR-316B's?

- Is Romania manifacturing Eurocopter helicopters in Brasov? Which models and what quantities? Are the EC-135s of the SMURD manufactured there or in France?

- Could you tell me something more about the airborne troops command from the time of Ceausescu? I know that it included the Otopeni air transport base and airborne regiments. How many were the latter and were they combined in an airborne division, or was the division the airborne troops command itself? Did the command also have other aviation units?

- Was the command under air force and air defence jurisdiction, or did it fall under direct command of the ministry of defence? Did it have its own airborne artillery, airborne engineers, airborne signals units, airborne AT units, or was it strictly airborne infantry?

- What was the main task of these airborne troops? Warsaw Pact operations? Anti-Warsaw Pact operations? Internal security?

- During the Cold War the Romanian General Staff feared, that the navy could be easily blocked in its ports, so for that possibility the naval personnel was trained to act as infantry in a secondary role, shall that happen. Was the 55th Marine Brigade formed for that reason, or was it formed later in the 90s? Is it true, that at some moment in the 90s the navy had under its command a whole land forces corps, with its own mechanised brigades, tank regiment and air defense missile regiment and if yes, do the three mechanised brigades of the 2nd Division have anything to do with it?

Thank you so much for your time.
