Can someone tell me when the CROSS OF THE INDEPENDENCE WAR 1877-1878 (trecerea Dunarii 1877) was design (instituita) ? It has a beret " Traditie"

The "Crossing of the Danube" Cross was originally instituted on 25 October 1877. But the TRADIŢIE bar on your medal indicates that the holder was in fact the son of an officer serving in the 1877 war.

I beleive that the cross currently on Ebay with the "Traditie" bar is a restrike of the original made in 1877. This one looks to have been made at the time the brevet was issued in 1910 and I have seen them also made and issued in the 1930's.
The type of metal used, and the suspension ring at the top of the medal will indicate if it is a restrike or later made piece.

The "traditie" stripe is granted when the holder of the medal was not a participant but a direct relative of him. The same situation is met today in the case of "Crucea de rezistenta anticomunista" medal.

QUOTE (Mareşal Boboescu @ Dec 22 2004, 08:38 PM)
The "traditie" stripe is granted when the holder of the medal was not a participant but a direct relative of him.

The descendant should also have been an active officer on the date of the award.
