I asked veteran pilot Lucaci Mihai about meeting the USAF.
He said that only one he found himself alone with a lost B-17(or 24),but when he begun closing the distance,4 IAR 80,came betweeen hin and the bomber.
He decided to fly back to Mamaia, since he was low on fuel.

Here is an International Red Cross (IRC) postcard, sent home by a USAAF airman, who was a prisoner of war in Rumania in "camp #13".

Someone, who is involved in researching the American side of the air war over Rumania, can check out his name to see if he was involved in the 'Tidal Wave' Operation.

It say that the plane was shot down by AA before the target.

Many rare pictures of TW B-24 shot down in Romania on 1 august'43, were recently found in private collections of old aviators family albums from Bucharest.
On some of them we can see clearly the nose arts and nicknames written on the fuselage. One is B-24 " Boomerang" with "Mel" Neef written under cockpit and unknown (until today ) other nickname of the plane " The Van..... Vir...." and the nose art ( guess what it is ?) painted on the left side of front fuselage.

For the moment, this pictures were available only for romanian TW historians due to lack of interest of other TW historians on this thread.
Fortunetly for the TW modellers, it will be available in the future a book with color profiles and nose arts, rare pictures and even color pictures of romanian pilots and Bf-109 of 53sq who fought on 1 august '43.

More details about the book i will post it soon.

Cantacuzino.

Re posting for April 12, 2005 showing a Red Cross post card from an American POW. I've checked the name against the crew listing for the August 1, 1943 Tidal Wave mission in the USAF history (AAFRH-3Z) and no one by that name is listed. Possibly from another mission?
