I think this thread should be named "Russian awards to Romanian soldiers" as it does not deal with other foreign awards.

According to the National History Museum, Prince Carol received the collar of the Order of St. Andrew on 29 November 1877, almost two months after the Order of St. George. |

The National History Museum has this rare photo of King Carol I wearing the collar of the Order of St. Andrew and the badge of the Order of St. George (among other Romanian and foreign awards).

Records for Saint George soldiers crosses were more then likely not kept in 1916-1917. There are many reports due to moral problems and a high degree of desertion in the Imperial Russian Army, that officers would show up at the front lines with with large boxes of crosses and hand them out to everyone who was still there as a moral booster. |

I do not think that this is the correct number of orders awarded to Romanians (see the discussion in the beginning of the thread). I guess most of these awards were in fact Crosses of St. George. |

Wherefrom did you get these numbers? Igor claimed there were 3 orders and 150 crosses. |

I have the list of all that were awarded between 1866-1879 and i simply counted 13 officers in the list, assuming they received the order.

I see. Well, I would really like to make some light into this story. Victor has posted earlier a list with 16 Romanian officers receiving St. George awards for the 1877-1878 war, of which it was confirmed that only two have received the Order of St. George. The other ones, all second lieutenants, appear to have received only the Cross of St. George, as if the Russian authorities not consider them officers and hence 'unworthy' of the Order of St. George. Was this some sort of a 'discrimination' of the Russian authorities or were they all NCOs who were raised to officer rank after the war? My original question regarding their situation has unfortunately remained unanswered. |
