15 Years Ago Started the Revolution in Rumania, The Ceusescus' days were numbered...

Today, December 16, 2004, is the 15th Anniversary of the first spark that ignited the Revolution in Rumania.
Least we forget.

I forgot to say that today Ion Iliescu pardoned besides Miron Cozma other 45 individuals, including a miliţia officer responsible for killing people during the Revolution.

What?! That's a fitting "tribute" to all the victims of the Revolution.
However, on a second thought, it's nothing unexpected from the (former) President.

I'm sorry to say this, but this last events generated by "bunicuta" - including here the decoration of Vadim with the same title as a Nobel prize for peace winer - forcess me to edit my location!

My scenario is that the eliberation and the arest of Cozma was to turn the attentionof the public from the "other".

This night while watching tv talkshows, I found that Ioan Corpodean and another one were released from detention several months ago after having completed their sentence (on parole), as they joined the discussion by phone. Ion Iliescu pardoned people that were not even in prison! However, because the revoking of the pardon decree (which by the way it's not legal), one of them has been taken by police this midnight. It's unbelievable what can happen in Romania in 2004.

15 years after Revolution, president Ion Iliescu shows us that he can dispose of the liberty of any person in this country at his own will, disregarding the laws and the institutions of the state.

Not for long, though. He has a couple of days left...

I remembered very well the downfall of the Ceausescu regime in Romania watching the execution of him and his wife on television on december 25 1989!

What I'm surprised at is that no foreign official has anything to say about these things! All this talk about Romania clearing up it's act, getting rid of corruption and ex-communist from administration, but when it is clear those currently in power ARE the former communist corrupt anti-democratic dinossaurs no one dears say annything! Someone from Bruxelles even expressed dissapointment about Nastase not being elected ("a true friend of ours" he said); Bush on the other hand, in the every now and then phonecall to Bucharest only recalls the rainbow that apeared during his speech here!
Western politicians are a great disappointment to me. I guess there the same as ours, only in their countries public pressure is greater, so they're on the watch-out.

You are absolutely right... Pressure might be greater, but the average quality of most (not all, but definitely MOST) Western politicians is quite disappointing to say the least...
Just look at what is happening right now in Spain: Zapatero, the current prime-minister, only won the elections (on behalf of P.S.O.E.) because of the terrorist bombing of March 11th, 2004 (several Romanian citizens died then), when some members of the former government (P.P.) lied to their people, by saying that the horrible event was due to ETA, not to Muslim terrorists. And also because their performance was ineffectual at best when an oil spill caused by a tanker off the Galician coast destroyed both the ecosystem and lives of so many persons that have jobs based on the rich fish resources of the area. Well this were the problems with P.P.
But Zapatero is no better than Aznar in any way. Cunning and calculist, he is also capable of very strange moves: a few days ago, he cancelled an important meeting in Poland because he felt "somewhat tired"! But the worst thing was the recognition of Gibraltar as an independent state (!!!) of its own: I heard the news in the radio last thursday when I was in Valladolid. The reaction of some friends and co-workers was very harsh... D. Zapatero thus created a diplomatic nightmare, by adding ice to the cake in the worse sense: instead of dealing with the U.K., he just added a third party to the equation!

15 years ago today, Ceausescu was finally overthrown. He and his wife fled with a helicopter, then captured. A turning point in the modern history of Rumania.

I have a vivid memory of the TV news, covering the events in Bucharest and elsewhere in Romania. Yes, I remember!
Everybody was astonished and amazed by the swift pace of the events. Back then, the usual Christmas family gathering was totally focused on what was going on - I recall that my father and some friends tried to follow the revolution as best as they could for a friend, deceased a few years ago, had the oportunity to visit Bucharest around 1987 or 88 and returned quite sad with what he saw. No wonder that when he (and us) saw the overthrowing of the tyrant, he felt a great joy!
