the execution of ceusescu was a political issue, imo

Some people may have a problem being called that way because of their ideas. Frankly I don't like it when members who don't agree with eachother start using this kind of language. If you want to sink to this level join a chat room.

I say ban Indrid...but on the same Christmas day...any other day won't be as fun...

Frankly, we should look at the execution from two angles: man's law (which was a shameful display of cowerdice and evilness from Iliescu's men) and God's law (which forbids killing other human beings)....

But of course, that eternal "I'm older than you" argument should shut our mouths for good... rolleyes.gif

That's no excuse to insult the other forum members.

For somebody following from a comfortable armchair what is happening in Bucharest, as the average folk from Western Europe in December 1989, making an execution on Christmas day had a very bad taste. Some bad taste it has today, 15 years later, when Romania is calm and quiet, and enjoying her imperfect freedom.

But in those days, the bullets were dropping as rain, common people were carried wounded to the hospitals by hundreds, the confusion was general, and everybody was shooting against everybody. Thousands of articles were written later about who were really as "terrorists", about their motivation, and how the opportunists who self-installed themselves as liberators took advantage from the political vacuum.

So I am not going to start the already worn subject of what was beyond those street shootings. I just want to say that a delay in execution would mean a continuation of that general hysteria, with everybody suspecting everybody, and literally everybody shooting to everybody. As a fact, as soon as Ceausescu was executed, the street shootings ceased rapidly, and the people started to cool down.

Most of the nation was very happy to learn about Ceausescu's execution, in that moment, and also considered it as well deserved. All of us changed in these 15 years: some of us grew older, others simply grew up. Most of us changed our thinking. As the time is running by, we start to weight facts, and not sentiments. You know from some of my posts that I recalled before what I considered the good parts of the Communist days. But there also the bad parts, bad enough to qualify the Ceausescu for their execution.

Back then people forgot about Christmas. I remember we made the Christmas tree hardly in January, after the New Year, when the things settled and me and my mother could move back to our apartament, since the Revolution cought us at my grandparents.

For those who do not remember, or choose to forget that pre-DEcember 1989 Golden Era, here is a small reminder: the TV program of Rumania's sole TV station (when airing time was 3 hrs. long. Later on, it was reduced to 2 hrs.), dated Jan. 26, 1989.

Gen. Dénes

P.S. If enyone needs a translation, we'll provide one.

I get the picture (no pun intended) with only a little help from my trusty Ro/English dictionary.............damn, no wonder they shot them quick.
cheers.
