New Chief of the General Staff

General Dumitru Popescu will be replaced next week at the head of the Romanian General Staff by lt. general Eugen Badalan, the present chief of the Land Forces Staff.

I wish I could say good riddance, unfortunately I'm afraid this is not the last time we hear of Mr. Popescu.

P.S. Isn't his first name Mihail?

Yes. I confused him with the CO of the 1st Cavalry Division in 1944.

The fact that Mihail Popescu will resign from the army and run for a place in the Lower Chamber of the Parliament in the Valcea county. Disappointing.

...with money made in the style most Romanian politicians make it...illegally. I always thought the army was 'cleaner' the government. Maybe not.

Rumania's latest four-star general (the highest rank a soldier can achieve during peacetime) is Dumitru Iliescu, a controversial person, who in 1989 was only a Major (!). He then was promoted four steps ahead in rank, to two-star General, in only 7 years, four years being sidelined by Pres. Constantinescu, just to be rehabilitated by Pres. Iliescu, who promoted him with two more steps in four years. Not bad at all...

He was also decorated by Pres. Ion Iliescu with the "Virtutea Militara" Order, Commandor's Class, in December 2002.
