To the day of today I was looking for this books in English...I couldnt find one...I am also desperately looking even for Russians books with more photos as I have no direct with Svetlana Pokrishin......I know the runned out of print but I am sure maybe someone could help me to locate his memoires.
Alex Pokrishkin was not only a person who opposed the old and outdated tacticts of the Stalinist VVS when the WWII has started, he was also not politically motivated, but just a front man who would chose the front instead ranks and an aviations school commander desk in Moscow , a modern thinking pilot and hero pilot who could fit into any new generation of military fighter pilots of today 63 years later without a problem...an outstanding example of fighter pilot and officer not really in our time but into all times. But first and foremost ...he gave to the arrogant war machinery of Hitler and its excellent trained Luftwaffe pilots mids of a war for survival when his AF started the war at half of its fighting capability due to Stalinist internal struggles at all level....a lesson that the Germans for generations and generations wouldn't forget. While Hartmann, Backhorn, Rall, Traut, Novotny and other German aces fought against a poorly trained Air Force and scored daily air kills against pilots and airplanes totally unfit to get airborne, Pokrishkin , Koshedub and other Russian aces rose from ashes ,from devasted and burned cities ,from blockades , deadly winters , miserable food rations , from a country in a total disper fighting for every inch of ground .....from a sick Stalinist system where someone had to fight both the Germans and its own system too.....Were these German aces still been able to fight the war and score the same victories if they were into the shoes of the Russian pilots ? My answer is NO WAY ! Alex Pokrishkin won the war not only against Hitler buts also against Stalinist system too...and unlike many of his arms commarades he kep his immunity with the Soviet systems and Soviet AF for many years after the wars end. For me he will remain one of greatest hero pilots USSR ever had......Alex Pokrishkin is gone but not forgotten ! Alex This post has been edited by alexkdl on February 22, 2005 12:20 am |

The dramatic photo bellow depicts Alex Pokrishkin inspecting his last aerial (59) on the front. I was trying to identify the German aircraft ...can anyone identify it ?

Yes Alex, Cip is right. It was a Fw -189 with winter cammo, the Argus engine and slim tail boom leave no doubts. Dan. |

1st Sqd 30 GVIAP Air Regiment rememberance photo with the most beautiful ftr aircraft of the WWII ( to my own opinion) ....just a shame that after WWII the Russians scrapped them all, instead admitting that this aircraft saved their day !

Lt Karlov albume contains also the repair of the engine of the P-400 which was a good deal in the winter by keeping the pilots back warm and by the pilot sitting inbetween a prop shaft and a bad news if the engine was hit by the Germans and caught fire .
