Here's an other interesting event the German records saying one thing , the Russian an other thing and general info is also very scanty. The Russian ace Maj. Krasnov Nikolay Fedorovich (47 air kills ) was shot down over the lake Balaton in Hungaria in January 29th 1945 by a roumanian pilot on a short dog fight (according to russian records I have) However the Russian Air Aces data base saying by the Luftwaffe...and the Germans sources are unable to determine.....all other sources saying Luftwaffe...is a Cantacuzino victim or ARR was not involved overthere ? All photos from A HAND FULL OF ACES

I couldn't find any loss on 23 March 1944 by the 9th Fighter Group and I do not know what losses the 6th Dive Bomber Goup suffered in 1944.
You probably mean He-111, not DO-111. ARR received Ju-88s only in 1943. There were no ARR bombers and fighters in the Crimean 1941-42 campaign.
No Romanian fighters operated in the Balaton Lake area, as there were no Romanian troops to support there. Maybe the victor was a Hungarian pilot. |

Denes, do me please a small favour and help me to identify an air medal worn by the Russian Ace photo posted a few messages ago ( Yevstignyev ) he wears along with the Russian medals ( such as red banner, red starm, Lenin and Hero order also a UK or French or eventually a US ( I would tend and say is UK) can you confirm ? I am puzzled on why becuase he didnt particpate in any joint tactics ,ferry, training or allied directed operations unlike some of his mates who flew the spitfires , hurricanes.......

http://www.elknet.pl/acestory/safonov/safonov.htm " Tragic, for Boris Safonov's career was the day of May 30th, 1941. Four P-40 fighters, piloted by Major A.N. Kuharienko, Capt. P.I. Orlov, Lt. W.P. Pokrovskiy, and commander Lt. Co. B.F. Safonov, flew a mission to air cover PQ-16 convoy. Soon after the flight started, Kuharienko had to return to base with aircraft technical problems. Three Soviet fighters spotted a group of Ju 88's from 3/KG 30 near the convoy. During the following battle, Safonov achieved 3 German bombers shot down, but soon his Kittyhawk engine stopped (it is not clear if it was from combat damage or a technical problem?). At 10:35 a.m., Safonov's plane crashed into the water. Of course, in that area, and with the water temperature, an emergency landing in water for any pilot meant death. " One fragment. I found some different sources with this type of story - North. Iama |

Here is the photos of Safonow P-40 the last plane he flew and lost his life with .The event describing is death is accurate...there are rumours from old Soviet records that he managed to get into the rescue dinghy located under his parachute seat....which was inflated though they didnt manage to locate him at all and rescue teams gave up . His final resting place may still be at sea

According to the information on http://www.airwar.ru/history/aces/ace2ww/p...ts/evstign.html Kirill Yevstigneyev might have fought against Romanian planes until 05 June 1944, as the following locations where he has recorded victories are on the Romanian front: - Iaşi (Яссы) - there is no doubt here; - Sculeni (Скуляны) is on the Prut river, a few km north of Iaşi; - Larga (Ларга) most likely is in Northern Bessarabia or south-west of Bacău. |

Carol it looks to me like the UK Airman Cross equivalent of USAF DSFC or the AIR FORCE cross which is awared upon special achievements in airmenship but it could be French awarded to the Russian pilots by the new French Government close to the wars end who flew or participated at Normdie/Niemen Sqd (I am not sure if he served at that sqd)
