QUOTE (alexkdl @ Feb 1 2005, 10:16 PM)
Carol it looks to me like the UK Airman Cross equivalent of USAF DSFC or the AIR FORCE cross which is awared upon special achievements in airmenship but it could be French awarded to the Russian pilots by the new French Government close to the wars end who flew  or participated at Normdie/Niemen Sqd (I am not sure if he served at that sqd)

The order in the image has a dark ribbon with a thin light stripe on the centre (as has the OBE), while both the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Force Cross have white ribbons with dark diagonal stripes (purple and red respectively). Furthermore, the cross in the image seems to be surmounted by a crown (thus less likely to be a republican award of France), but neither the DFC, nor the AFC were surmounted by crowns. The OBE on the other hand has the cross surmounted by a crown.

Then it was a misunderstanding. Could you please post an image of the cross you are referring to or maybe give some more details about it? I have difficulties identifying it. Thanks.

Alex, I read again what you have said and it seems that you refer either to the British Distinguished Flying Cross or the British Air Force Cross. Am I right or wrong?

Please take a look at the images on the pages below and let me know if any of them is the cross you wanted to add to your collection (I have also given links to the US distinctions bearing the same name as the British ones in order to avoid some further misunderstandings).

British Distinguished Flying Cross

US Distinguished Flying Cross

British Air Force Cross

US Air Force Cross

Was there another British award (other than the Distinguished Flying Cross) which was the equivalent of the US Distinguished Flying Cross? If yes, could you please describe in words how it looked like? Thanks.

Your collection of aviation related insignia seems indeed impressive.

The badges are those of the "Order of Michael the Brave with swords", i.e., the 1944 version of the Order of Michael the Brave. This order was indeed awarded to Soviet officers, so there is nothing strange here.

Also, judging by the relative size of the badges, the Soviet officer is wearing the insignia of both the second and the third class, as it was in fact required by the regulations of the Order of Michael the Brave.

Carol, I understand but the Russians were highly disapproving Roumanian King and his regime even after Aug 23.1944 so howcome they would wear monarchial medals ?

Bellow also Jukow is wearing two foreign medal crosses
