I'm impressed! These pictures are great and really gives a good feel of Bucharest at the time. It seems a very beautifull city!

One thing that struck me btw as rather surprising was the many modern (art deco?) buildings. How come Bucharest has such a modern look on many of the pictures? Was it an effort on behalf of the city or government at the time or did some Rumanian architects promote art deco (if the style is art deco, that is - not my strong side, art and architecture) in the 30's and early 40's?

Best regards!

- Mr.B.

I think it was the initiative of the authorities (government and municipality) to modernise the city in the 1930s. This did not affect only the public edifices but also the private ones which had to be built according to the general recommendations of the municipality regarding the architectural lines. Thus, many of the old buildings were then demolished to be replaced by buildings in the style you mentioned. A contemporary magazine even mentioned the transformation of Bucharest from "Little Paris" into "Little New York".

It is hard to compete with you, as you seem to have an impressive collection of pre-WWII photos of Bucharest. wink.gif

My grandma used to take me on end of the 50's to a place in Bucharest called Consignazie ( shopping mall of all stuff from abroad, valued toys, valued clothes etc) to this day I remember a place where models of German Merklin trains were soled plus many other beautiful toys ....the other place I used to look with my gang of friends was Muzeul Militar la Cotroceni...do they still exist today ?

Any photos my friend ?
