QUOTE

Well, somebody ought to post all these pictures for everybody to know how was Bucharest before communism. In fact (no ofense Fratello) I think many of us have the same "collection" downloaded from a share client, more or less complete.

Just be attentive! you already repeat yourself and others.

Somebody (Cantacuzino?) mentioned I don't remember in what topic a very good resource of old photoghaphy. Unfortunately one must ask for clearence to post them on internet.

Check it out as there are tens of pics from Romania too. Some of them, for example the ones in colour with germans soldiers in Bucharest, walking or sitting in a terace-bar are there too.

As I said somebody posted this link some time ago and I repeat it here:

Mr. Barbosu what you don't know is that a lot of these pictures are collected by me from some years ago (I think I have almost 500 photos with old Buchares). These photos you can also find in A.N.I.C (Arhivele Nationale Istorice Centrale), Academia Româna and some of them are postal cards (this is the original source not the internet).
So, I don't know what did disturb you. What I want is just to show everybody a piece of old Bucharest (that was called also "the little Paris")
And BTW I didn't post the color photos with german soldiers in Bucharest

1. Nothing's wrong, Fratello, as I said, I am glad to see all these photos posted here. As I told you, I have also hundreads of these photos (mostly the same as you) from internet sharing. Great for you if you have the originals. I am not a real collector, just a "fan" of old Bucharest. smile.gif

2. I didn't said you or others copied the photos from timelifepictures.com nor that you posted the colour pics with germans in Bucharest.

I wish we could post the pictures from the mentioned site without any costs. Maybe I'll ask for permission.

Cheers,

Barbosu

again Elisabeta BLV. this is across the street from the Gambrinus Beer House (not seen in picture), now closed because it is involved in a law suit (AFAIK).

This is the "Grand Hotel du Boulevard" on Elisabeta Blv. and the plazza in front of Central House of the Army, as seen from Calea Victoriei.

The buildings on the left, (exept for the big one in the back, on Victoriei Av) disappeared. The hotel is still there.

The same Elisabeta Blv, with the corner where in the present there is a MacDonald's and a hotel.

As you see, in those times there was a restaurant too.
In the back there was the Minstry of Administration IIRC, the Bucharest city council in present. Also the building betwen the is still there now.

Again "Grand Hotel du Boulevard" seen from Calea Victoriei (I believe the photo was shot from Capsa Hotel). A lot of carriages waiting in front of the Central House of Army.

The Elisabeta Bld down from the corner with Calea Victoriei, with the Central House of Army (CCA) on the right, Grand Hotel du Boulevard on the left.

The plazza in front of CCA was higher then and there were some stairs to the sidewalk going down along the CCA building. The stairs disappeared.

QUOTE (Fratello @ Feb 25 2005, 09:20 AM)
Sweet chesnut's street vendor on Elisabeta Avenue

The stairs I've mentioned can be better seen in this photo (posted by Fratello in page 22 of the topic) that first puzzled me, because I recognized finally the Grand Hotel de Boulevard with it's statues, but there are no stairs like those at CCA in the present.

I was wrong. In that time, there were stairs, as the sidewalk was narrower, as you will see in the photo below.

QUOTE (alexkdl @ Jan 13 2005, 03:40 PM)
Heres again the photo at a double size, I still try to recognise the street !

Al

Today I was near Lipscani str. and I verified my belief that the photo with the jeep posted by Alex in page 1 (second post) of the topic is taken from across the Baratia monastery or today's Cocor shopping center.

The five stories building on the right of the jeep and the little one besides are still there, bordering St Gheorghe Plazza.

This is a reversed angle, with I.C. Bratianu Square (now University Square) with the University on the right.

Interesting to note:

Back, in the center you can see a building under construction, with a crane. That is the 11 stories building behind the Grand Hotel du Boulevard, with the entrance on Calea Victoriei. sad.gif I don't have a picture of it, but I have a story:

On the top floor there was an apartment of HM King Michael, with a swimming pool inside. I have the story from a man living there. He has an apartment there of two rooms which originally was a 7 room apartment, but was confiscated and divided by the communists and given to top activists.

Anyone can confirm the story with King Michael apartment and swimming pool??
