Maybe we look so kindly these photos because of the grief of today's dirt and smoke.
Maybe there was dirt then too, but I hope not. At least builduings were beautiful, people were beautiful. Nevertheless, I am sure there were poor people, there were problems. But I am sure again that if all that would have continued without "the help" of communists, Bucharest was a lot different than today. Anyway, this a front view of Carlton bldg. As usual, I try to read the shops' names. There is Asociatia Generala a Medicilor at Carlton (The General Association of medical doctors). Then in only could read on the left Suchard and Riviera. Does anyone have pictures with 1940 earthquake damages? And I am interested in pictures during and after the bombing raid (allied or german). Attached Image |

This one is a view to Carlton from University Square. Now it would be in front of National Theater, close to the sub entrance (underground, metro).
IIRC on the place of today's national theater was a bazaar and then the circus? Can anyone tell me that? Attached Image |

Another section of I.C. Bratianu Blv. that still exists. Youcan see the Italian church.
The white house from the left was replaced later by a higher building. Attached Image |

Across the street from Scala Cinema, the crossing of IC Bratianu and Clementei Str (CA Roasetti, today).
On the right is the building with Jawohl on top (PetrolExportimport today). At the ground floor there is a HERMES shop and HACE (?). The bldg in center is still standing today. Attached Image |

Now front view of the bldg with HERMES shop. On it's right there is LIDO hotel. Next to Hermes there is a sweet-shop (cofetarie).
Above Hermes there was Szekely & Reti Furniture (Mobile). Attached Image |

Scala Cinema (seen in other photos on this topic too).
Observation: next to Scala today is Ciclop-Daewoo auto shop/service. In those days it was the building of Citroen (it seems there were many Citroen in Bucharest ) Attached Image |

From Scala to Romana Square the name of the Blv was Tache Ionescu.
Here is a view from Romana. Far in the back you can see Ambassador Hotel under construction. The little square with statue is the parking from Vanatoru today (near the entrance to the metro/subway) Attached Image |

And finally, at the end of Tache Ionescu Blv, Piata Romana (Romana Square).
There is Academia de Studii Economice (ASE - Economics Academy?) . In fact without the statue, the Square from this angle looks the same today. Attached Image |

I will post now some aerial pictures of Bucharest, some panoramas.
First of them was shot before the construction of modern buldings on IC Bratianu and Tache Boulevards. As you can see on IC Bratianu were Italian Church and the building next to it. From Continental Hotel to IC Bratianu Blv. Regala Street had already some of it's buildings but there were not the Negoiu and Union hotels. I leave you the joy to discover other bldgs. The Atheneum is the subject of this picture but you can see a Tache Ionescu Blv (Magheru) in the back without Scala (it will be raised on the place marked with S on the photo) or any other high building.
You can see marked on the photo: B - Boteanu Church BCU - Carol Foundation (Central Universitary Library today) C - Cina Restaurant H - Athenee Palace Hotel But there are many buildings from this picture still standing today. Attached Image |
