My uncle died near Iassy, at Bucium(hear he was buried). in May 9th. 1944. He was NCO in the 18th.Mountain Group /18th.Mountain Division. He was from Tg. Jiu. I don't know anything about the operations he participated. Can somebody help me to know much more about 18th.Mountain Group? Were they fighted? At Iassy in May 1944 was a big battle?

It was the 18th Division, not Group. It wasn't a major battle, but a local one. The 18th Division was defending a bridgehead over the Prut River, northwest of Iasi. Between 23 Arpil - 12 May there was some serious fighting going on there, as the Red Army tried to reduce the bridgehead, but eventually failed. The 18th Division suffered over 5,000 casualties.
For details on the 18th Division between 1941-1944, read the article about its commanding officer, maj. gen. Radu Baldescu here. You will find a more detailed description of the fighting. |

At Iassy on his grave it said "grupul 18 Vanatori " I think that 18th group was part of the 18th mountain division. |

Yes it was, but I do not have details on actions at regimental level for this case.
