The only major naval engagement between Romanian and Soviet ships on the surface was this one:

Given the imbalance in strength, the Romanian Navy avoided direct engagements with the Soviet Black Sea fleet.

Hi Dragos,

Wasn't there also a smaller engagement between some Soviet raiders and a Romanian-German convoy escort in late 1942? I think the Koslinski-Stanescu book mentions it.

Cheers,

Sid.

The one I mentioned is the single direct engagement of large ships (destroyers and bigger). There may have been indeed other minor engagements, but the question of the topic was about the largest naval ship engaged by the Romanian Navy. I have edited my initial post in order not create confusion.

Yes, the torpedo boat Smeul did engage two Soviet large minesweepers in 1942. I believe that episode is also mentioned on the forum somewhere.
