Unfortunately, the intervention of C-2 on this topic was timely.

I just read in Mediafax news that another Rumanian MiG-21 LanceR crashed nearby Beliu, Arad:

ARAD/CLUJ-NAPOCA, 22 nov.

WHO TO BELIEVE ??

MIG crashed at Arad

The pilot, the only person onboard, bailed out.

The plane accident is the ninth such incident involving MIG 21-Lancer aircrafts.

Nine O'Clock (WEb- Page) published in issue 3816 page 5 at 2006-11-23

Arad – A MIG 21 Lancer crashed at Beliu (Arad), yesterday at noon. Before closing the edition, authorities had not yet managed to find the pilot, the only person on board, who is belived to have bailed himself out.

The aircraft, which belongs to the military unit at Campia Turzii, was on a training flight bound for Arad. The aircraft crashed near a timber depot within the radius of the Beliu forest range, forming a crater of 6-7 meters. It appears that the pilot tried to avoid crashing on a populated area. A local resident saw an object falling down from above the forest, before the plane crash.

The representative of the Campia Turzii Air Base, Marian Dobre, said that the pilot was experienced, which rules a piloting error out*. According to the same source, that was a technical flight, which means there was no ammunition aboard the he aircraft. The flight route has been complied with as well.

The mayor of Beliu, Pavel Tica, recounts: “At 12:45 p.m., I was at the town hall when I heard a rumble. (…) Local residents said that at the moment the plane crashed, they saw sn object flying above the forest, which led them to believe that the pilot bailed himself out.

A commission from Campia Turzii, together with prosecutors at the Timisoara Military prosecutor’s Office, came to conduct an enquiry at the scene.

The plane accident in Arad County yesterday is the ninth so far involving a MIG 21-Lancer of the Romanian Air Force. We remind a few of the previous accidents. In august 1999, a MIG 21-Lancer-B 9511 of Group 95 cashed near Bacau. Both pilots aboard bailed out. Two years later, July 13, 2001, MIG-21 Lancer-C 7017, went down near Zemes-Paltinis. Pilot Viorel Balu bailed out as well.

On February 21, 2002, Lieutenant Commander Adrian Savulescu, with the Air Force 86, died in the crash of a MIG-21 Lancer-A, into a lake, at Cuza Voda, near Calarasi. A year later, on March 26, 2002, Lieutenant Catalin Miclos, bailed himself out from a MIG-21 Lancer-A 9811 that belonged to Air Base 71. The accident happened near Sandulesti, Cluj County.

A similar accident happened on October 22, 2002, when the aircraft MIG-21 Lancer-A 5907, steered by Lieutenant Florin Butcovan, fell to the ground near Bacau. The pilot managed to escape.

On August 26, 2004, two MIGs aircraft were involved in an accident in Mures County. The two MIG-21 Lancer-R simple command fighter planes with the Air Base 71 at Campia Turzii collided in mid air, around 17”45 p.m., during a training flight. One of the planes crashed on the outskirts of Cristesti, injuring a local resident, and the other, on the village of Santioana, injuring two. The two aircraft were completely destroyed, and the two pilots bailed out before the planes hit the ground.
by Adina Popescu End of Article.

A very quick report to say it was not Pilot error, when there is no confirmation in this article that he is alive or dead.

NCR, you should be aware by now that the big majority of Romanian journalists are illiterate. Never believe the first report.

Here is the official communicate of RoAF.

The Puma accident I was talking about took place on the 24.Oct.

I don't care what they gonna tell us,but it is forbiden for an helicop. to fly over water, and it is also forbiden to fly lower then 50m.
Since the one who was flying the helic in the moment the accident happened, was taking some lessons from the captain, the last one is to blame.

Apparently he didnt want to eject in order to avoid crashing the plane on a village. The villagers consider him their hero because he went over their houses at very low altitude then crashed outside the village.

I was browsing a military aviation magazine in the bookstore today, and it had an article on Romania's airplane graveyard.

Apparently, Romania has one of Europe's largest military airplane graveyard. It's located near Craiova, and contains over 120 Mig-21 Fishbeds and IAR-93 planes. They also had some pictures of it - it was sad to see so many airplanes, some of them appearing to be in good condition, strewn across a field in complete disarray. In some of the Migs, bees had built nests in the cone of the airplane's nose.

The magazine is Air Force Monthly, November 2006. On page 46, Romania's Ghost Town, talks about this aircraft graveyard.
