I would like to find out more about them, how they got to fight alongside Gr 7 Vt, how they got permission to buy the planes and come here, what happened after the 2 brothers died in that mission and generally about their sorties on the eastern front.

The death of Ruspoli brothers in air combat over Bessarabia is only an 'urban myth'.
The story is originating from several Rumanian veterans' memoirs and was lifted into various books unchecked. In fact, only one of the Ruspolis was a pilot and he did not die in Rumania.

There was a thread, opened by you a few months ago, regarding Italian airmen, where some details were already given: http://www.worldwar2.ro/forum/index.php?sh...1594&hl=ruspoli

I don't know if there were brothers or not, but i know there are pictures with italiens ( with their Macchi 200 ) along with romanian pilots ( Brancoveanu one of them). Also about Russpoli story i can not confirm( Maybe Dicezare know some details). What is for sure ( from pictures) Machi 200 and Iar 80 used the same airfield ( Salz?) for take off in combat.

Yes I also know apicture with romanian planes on airfield and an italian plane behind them.I think the Ruspoli brothers story should have at least very little truth in it (like some italian pilots fighting side by side with romanian pilots), even 2500+ years old myths have 1% truth in them smile.gif

Anyway the italian pilot badge on many romanian pilots uniform confirm this and i don't think the name Russpoli was invented by romanians.

The Italian pilot's badge was awarded to Rumanian airmen for various reasons, which I doubt have connection to Count Ruspoli (one reason is the presence of a small contingent of Italian flying instructors in Rumania, the other is diplomatic protocol).
You may ask DiCesare why did he get his Italian badge (besides him being of Italian origin).

Why would you say that? Of course, the name wasn't invented by the Rumanians. sad.gif
The three brothers indeed existed. But - as I said - only one was a fighter pilot, a volunteer one, Cpt. Carlo Maurizio Ruspoli, Prince of Poggio Suasa, and he was not killed in 1941, over Bessarabia.

Mytzu, look here:
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=75258

I have asked the same question yesterday on AHF and got a few replies from some Italian members.

Apparently there were 4 Ruspoli brothers, of which two in the air filming unit (Reparto autonomo di volo cinematografico). One was Carlo Maurizio the unit's CO and the man who came up with the idea and Emanuelle. Only the first one was a fighter pilot (he scored 11 confirmed kills during WW2). The second flew the Cant 1007Z or the Ca 313s transports the unit was equipped with.

Another two brothers: Marescotti and Costantino died in 1942 at El Alamein, while fighting in the Folgore Parachute Division.

Attached you have the honorary Italian fighter pilot license received by cpt. av. Alexandru Manoliu in January 1942, following the cooperation with the Italian unit.

Very interesting, thank you Victor ! So at least there was some little truth in the story, I am glad it was cleared up now.I wonder if it isn't a good ideea to copy/paste the info from that forum and post it here as well so anyone who is interested about this subject might find it easy in only one place.
