Am looking for a list of the men who commanded the various divisons in the Romanian Army in World War I. Any and all information appreciated.

Thanks to both of you for the information. I wonder if there is a comprehensive source that might be available in the US? Whether there is or isn't, thanks again and hopefully more info will be forthcoming.
Victor: I presume with the first name and as moderator you are Mr. Nitu. You have confused me with my late father, who you knew through emails. He was very impressed with this site (all the way back when it was "Dutch Helmet"). He thought your knowledge, even of obscure World War I generals, was very good and I know he followed the site, even though he had little he could add to it, until he was simply too ill to continue. FYI his notes show the first name of the Valeanu who commanded IV Corps to be Gheorghe, although there is no note beside it to show where he got the info. Thanks again for your help. Rich |

I am sorry to hear about your father.
Unfortunately I do not know of any book in English about the subject. petru, the CO of the 1st Infantry Division was Ioan Dragalina, who rose to the command of the 1st Army by late 1916. He was unfortunately KIA on the Jiu Valley. He was one of the most capable Romanian commanders of the time. |

Thanks for the kind word about Dad.
Perhaps it's better done as a separate thread, but I just finished the new article (which is quite good) and have a question. The Romanian Army simply botched 1916. And as far as most people know that's the sum total of the Romanian war effort (well, most Americans probably don't know Romania was even in the war ). But the turnaround in 1917 is not only quick by also extremely thorough. I wondered what the people here thought caused such an abrupt and successful turnaround from the collapse of 1916? It's mostly unknown, frankly suprising (after 1916), and damned impressive. Any ideas? Rich |

I would guess it was the energetic reorganisation of the army using French expertise. |

And weapons, of course. I included them in the general term "reorganisation". |

We should also take into consideration the human factor.
The commanders who distinguished themselves during 1916 were promoted and assigned to important posts, while many of the incompetents were removed. The soldiers, mostly peasants, were promised by the King land and the right to vote after the war, thus canceling the effects of the Bolshevik propaganda among them (both reforms were carried out). |
