Hello,
This is my first post here on this forum! I'm not Romanian but I am very interested in the Romanian military history, and the units involved in the Battle of Stalingrad especially. I have got a question about these units: Can someone tell me what the 'Col. Voicu Detachment' exactly was? I know that it fought in the area of Stalingrad, but where exactly? And what were the subordinated units of the detachment? Thanks in advance and regards, Ironclad |

"Colonel Voicu" Detachment (or Kletskaya Detachment) comprised two battalions of the 12th Infantry Regiment, the 13th Light Battalion, the German 611th Tank-destroyer Battalion, strengthened with the 54th Pioneers Battalion and an artillery battalion of the 4th Heavy Artillery Regiment.
At the beginning of the battle, "Colonel Voicu" Detachment was deployed near Kletskaya, having at the left the 89th Infantry Regiment and at the right the 992nd Infantry Battalion. |

And how did the unit come to an end? Was it destroyed during operation Uranus? And the commander was Colonel Voicu I suppose?  Thanks, Ironclad |

it was encircled on 19 November, but managed to brake out the same day and retreat to the southeast.

It was cut off from the rest of the Romanian units at west, and it ended up with the German 6th Army, together with the 1st Cavalry Division.

The composition of the German 611th Tank-destroyer Battalion at 19.XI.42:
3 x 75mm AT guns 3 x 76.2mm AT guns 14 tank destroyers (75mm) At 5 hours, 19.XI.1942, the 611th Tank-destroyer Battalion was situated on the heights 4 km south-west of Kletskaya, together with the 54th Pioneers Battalion forming an anti-tank barrage. |

On 9 December 1942, Colonel Voicu Detachment was in the pocket of Stalingrad, with the effectives redistributed to the German units of General (Hans) Hube Group and LI Corps.
Effectives: 1,700 men, the 100mm Artillery Battalion of the Armored Division and the I Battalion/4th Artillery Regiment with 6 guns. |
