Hello

I am wanting to investigate the history of my past neighbour who dies recently.

He was a Romanian immigrant after WW2 and I lived next to him from when I was a child of 6 to an adult of 22.

I learnt to fly at 16 and had many discussion with him.

He said he was in the Romanian Airforce, or as he said, 'The Romanian Free Airforce'. He said he flew ME110’s

His name was Gheorghe Pana Soare. He changed this to George Pana to be a more English name as he immigrated to New Zealand in the 1950’s.

I would like to know how to find out more about him if records exist.

Can anyone help?

Regards,
Brent McCunn

There was a Rumanian soldier in the Rumanian air force, Paun Soare, who was a technician (maistru) in Sept. 1938.

I got news!
I talked with mr Capbatut(86years old but looks like 70).
He knew Mr Soare but was a year before him in the flying school.
110 pilot and Mr Capbatut's best friend Titus Axente, knew him better but unfortunatly he died several months ago.
All Capbatut tell me was that Soare left Romania with the Germans and he lost all contact with him.
As he told you,he did flew Me 110C!

Adj. av. Gheorghe Pana is mentioned in the book of J. L. Roba: 'La chasse de nuit Germano-Roumaine', ed. Modelism, p. 86. The text confirms that the young Rumanian airman did indeed leave with the Germans on Aug. 26, 1944 as he wanted to continue to fight against the Soviets.
After the war, reportedly he was a commercial pilot in South America.
