Well, I could recommend you a quite interesting lecture about an alternative WW2 scenario, that starts with USSR declaring war against Poland in 1937...Extremly interesting...
http://www.shatteredworld.net/ Sorry, I don't read books like Sven Hassel... |

Hi bebe,
Here are some books published in Romania that deals with real events: Cornelius Ryan - Un pod prea indepartat (A bridge too far) Dwight D. Eisenhower - Cruciada in Europa (Crusade in Europe) Richard Rohmer - Rommel si Patton (Rommel and Patton) Gilles Perrault - Ziua cea mare (Le Grand Jour) And for the fictional sort, I recommend the 08/15 series by Hans Hellmut Kirst and "Amurgul barbatilor" by Vincent Gabarra. |

Hi Bebe,
If you had asked this question before you had read Sven Hassel, I would have advised you to avoid his books completely. They are poor history and poor literature. Please do not under any circumstances draw any historical conclusions from them. They are complete rubbish. Cheers, Sid. |

Good work, Sid! I am a Sven Hassel-hater myself (tried to read one of his books about 10 years ago, left it because it was one of the most boring things I have ever tried). Bebe ( ), why don't you try, at first, general historical books about WW2 that are easily found in Romania, like:
"Al doilea razboi mondial" by Winston S. Churchill "Istoria celui de-al doilea razboi mondial" by B. H. Liddell Hart "Mari decizii ale celui de-al doilea razboi mondial : 1939-1945" by Jacques de Launay "Originile celui de-al doilea razboi mondial" by A. J. P. Taylor "Al doilea razboi mondial : actiuni militare, politice si diplomatice:cronologie" by Leonida Loghin Come on, you can do it, bebe ( )... |

For authors tackling single battles or campaigns I would recommand from memory David Glanz and Anthony Beevor. You can't go wrong with these 2. I also like G Jukes.

Your choice, but try to combine Hassel style books with reading real books of history. In precedent posts you have been adviced to go for some good books and writers. I do not recommand you nothing. But i give an example: i was/'m a reader of Sven Hassel, but at the time when i read ... what was the first book readed? "Blindatele mortii". Nomber 3 in modern romanian edition. (A school coleague was reading at the same time "Batalion de mars", and at school we tell each other what we discover in last pages read... now, he is a priest, i - IT). Were i am? So, when i was reading my first book by S.H., in paralel i was reading Jacques de Launay. 13 - 14 years old. Anyway, if don't work... and you like action style writings, try to read "Le grand show" of Pierre Closterman. Airfights. I know, i write "I do not recommand you nothing"... Iama |

If you want to read a classic book about the experience of the common soldier in battle, I would recommend John Keegan, The Face of Battle.
It doesn't talk about World War 2 though, sorry. I will leave it to our Romanian members to say whether it is available in Romania. |

Yes!!!!!! Keegan is the top!!!!! Any of his books, But Face is an EXCELLENT entre'.... impossible to put it down, once you start it. His Mask of Command is also terrific, and includes brilliant study of Hitler as exemplar of the "False Heroic" category of military leadership. Those are the two books I would have to have if I were marooned on a desert island. cheers to all.....have a good summer!! P.S....please send pics of any manele festivals, and/or gay parades you attend.... |
