Deadcat, first of all you should upgrade to the latest version, which is Pe2 addon + 4.08 patch.
The a.i. is cheating in IL2 - I mean it - so don't take the a.i. as an example for you will never be able to equal what the a.i. is doing. Here is how I do it with the Emil when for example I try to land on dirt roads (which is very difficult at first): I com in at 150 Km/h, radiator closed, engine 50%, auto prop-pitch, gear down - this is the configuration that will allow you to fly straight without loosing altitude but also land; I line up with the road, I fly a litle above it to make sure I am perfectly alligned, then gently put the wheels down. |

that means buying IL2 1946, right? as the newest IL2+ACE+PF patch is 4.04m. well i'll be buying it probably this weekend. speaking of which, is the addon "IL-2 Sturmovik - World War II" worth the money?
when i go at that speed somehow i never manage to fly level, i see the altitude drop rather quickly. i usually have the radiator open at 2, does this matter? the drag increase shouldn't be all that much. prop pitch is auto for me too. do you have flaps deployed at that speed? how do you remain at 150 with 50% engine? i usually manage to stay roughly level at 35% engine with landing flaps. if i increase to 50 i usually accelerate to 200-220. probably i'm not really leveled and still descending. this is all Denes' fault as reading his book made me dig out IL2 once again This post has been edited by dead-cat on August 09, 2007 09:13 am |

All addons that are not made by Oleg, only contain campaigns and skins. No new maps, no new objects no new planes. In my opinion it is only worth if you like playnig offline so much and don't like to build your own missions.
Sorry, I did forget to mention I had landing flaps deployed; so my road landing configuration (whcih should very well work on airfields) is: - engine 50% - radiator closed - flaps landing - gear down When I land at airfields I come in all sort of positions/speed/altitudes/situation; we only fly online and many times when landing we must come in fast with bandits in our six, or from high altitude with a fast drop and touch down, etc. so this is why I take the road landing as a standard because it is the only time when I do use a standard configuration |

thanx.
i do like single player mode as i'm not good enough to play online as long i'm struggling with basics. i also found the campaign mode enjoyable, so i might come to like the "unofficial" addon |

OK, i got myself IL2 1946 this weekend. I was yet too stingy for any addon
I noticed a few oddities, however. I'm playing a "dynamic" 1941 Crimea campaign. got a mission to intercept soviet aircraft bound to bomb a bridge. the mission started with an alert, while taking off 2 yak strafed the airfield, and apparently destroyed the 7th aircraft on the ground (i tried the mission like 4 times and it was allways the 7th) from the 8 lined up. which had the effect that the traffic controller would not give landing permissions, which is quite stupid if you expect to land on autopilot. the AI aircraft would just go round "Wartesaal" until the fuel was exhausted, Somehow i don't think dragging a 2.5 ton aircraft from a paved runway would be so much of a problem, especially not for a game "7 years in development" as the box description states. however, taking D13-th_Mytzu's advices into account i managed to land manually (of course not without bouncing though). on the same mission, the soviet "bombers" turned out to be 10 Chaikas. here i noticed the insane amount of damage a Chaika (or any russian aircraft for that matter) could take. i shot down 2 Chaikas rather quickly while i had 20mm cannon ammo left, but once i was on MGs only, i think i scored at least 20 hits on a Chaika from around 120m without making any impression. mind you, it was the last Chaika alive, so 5 other Bf 109 ganged up on it. the Chaika must have recived 60-70 hits at least before starting to burn. a bit of an exaggeration of sturdiness. on a diffrent intercept mission, the patrol area seemed to have been designed as an infinite loop. the aircraft would circle until the enemy arrived, then they engaged. however, after destroying all the enemy aircraft, they would return to the patrol area and circle until the fuel was exhausted. the "Rottenführer" even yelled at me when i departed the formation towards the airstrip, being low on fuel. must have been a prussian , i think. Heh
The offline missions/campaigns that come with the game, really suck.. you get bored really quick by teh stupidity, lack of realism and infinte loops. I suggest you try either some good offline modes (such as man made missions/campaigns or 3rd party made software for mission/campaign generation). Also, for more info you can check out our forum: http://www.d13-th.ro/forum |

actually i don't find them all that bad for the beginning. but once i finished this one, i'll probably move on to custom "static campaigns" tho.
thx for the forum link. |

inspired by our new member "TANASE" i thought i'd give the IAR 80 a try.
so a quick mission setup, me in a IAR 80 1940 vs. a soviet U2. the U2 is extraordinarily slow, however it has a rear gunner which could make the life of an unsuspecting pilot quite difficult. Crimea 5000m no AA, enemy average. first it was really painful to adapt to an aircraft with no auto prop pitch, being used to the Bf 109. however i found the aircraft unexpectedly maneuverable, but painfully under gunned. the 4 MGs just don't have the punch. however it's a good aircraft to fly to train for bombers without auto-prop pitch. i found it easy to land in it (or maybe my landing skill improved a bit ). i think i must have attacked more than 10 times from all angles, below, front rear (after i killed the tail gunner) and i certainly scored more than 80 hits at least from less than 200m. it would not go down, the wings would not break although i hit them repeatedly. eventually after more than 10 passes i think i hit the pilot as it went down without any visual damages (no oil trail, nothing burning). it took me about 30 min to down that aircraft. I can't imagine how i would kill a Pe-2 or a larger bomber in it. the lack of 20mm cannons was really painful. i tried the same thing in an Emil and shot the U2 down on the first pass. it's probably more a marksman's plane. too much of a marksman's for me at this level tho. |

When attacking wooden planes that have material cover and not metal, you have 2 options:
1) you have a plane armed with cannon(s): you try to brake the wing, bust the engine or kill the pilot 2) you have a plane armed only with mg's: since you cannot set it on fire from incendiary bullets, you only have 2 ways to go - kill the pilot or bust its engine. |

with the cannons i hit the rear part of the aircraft like 3-4 times and it broke apart. as it was a pass at high speed difference i didn't aim for particular components.
with the MGs i must have hit the cowling during a turn at least 6-7 times with no result. i wonder where the fuel tank is, as it should have leaked at least, given the raw number of hits. funny, sometimes they break apart instantly, even when hit from 300+ m and sometimes they seem to soak up damage as if they were battleships. the IAR 80 really *needs* cannons. given the kill stealing practiced by "wingmen" i have to give up my multiple pass strategy for a high risk approach, exposing myself to the tail gunner, to put enough bullets into a bomber to break the wing on the first pass, because until i can set up a new one, the wingmen will gang up on it and steal the kill. from a 6 Pe-2 formation i ended up with 1 kill only because of this. I've read on forums about kill stealing but i didn't imagine it's so blatant. one would think that "seven years of development" would've led to fix for this, but oh well...
