I checked Google Earth (a fantastic tool, highly recommended) and found for Mamaia a similar satellite photo Mytzu & Carol have posted earlier.

The grey strip is there; however, I don't think it represents a concrete runway, as Mamaia didn't have one during the war, IIRC.

Tip: When searching for targets in Rumania, make sure you type 'Rumania', not 'Romania', as Google Earth would not recognize the latter spelling form.

It appears that Google Earth uses the same database as Google Maps, hence the almost identical images.

In these images concrete appears in all shades from white (e.g., on the runway of Băneasa airport) to black (e.g., on the runway of Henri Coandă airport), grey included. On the other hand, north-west from the grey strip there are large triangular structures with the same colour. As it is highly unlikely that they are concrete 'slabs', maybe the strip is not concrete either.

This is quite odd because the message one receives from Google Maps when trying to search for 'Rumania' is: "We could not understand the location Rumania".

A friend from Constanta went to the old Mamaia airfield and took some pictures, he also found the old hangars which are now used by some company - he made pics with them too.He is waiting confirmation to join this forum so he can post himself about it.He told me the location of the hangars and considering what pilots said - taking off/landing to/fomr the sea and by looking at the maps I first posted, I came with this ideea:

Right now we have "Canalul Dunare-Marea Neagra" going across it, so I think the airfield was closer to the sea:

Here is how a German wartime document describes Mamaia airfield:
QUOTE
Mamaia übungsplatz. 15 km N Constanta, 500 m N Mamaia, 1050 m x 900 m, 2 Hallen, 1 Werkstatt, elektrisches Kraftwerk. Deutsches Barackenlager für 300 Mann.

Perhaps this helps locate the airfield accuarely.

The rough location of the airfield according to the information posted by Dénes:

It is almost overlapping onto the location indicated by Mytzu.

Since the guy who went to the airfield did not received the registration confirmation yet, he asked me to post this:

Hi guys. I will be known on this forum as D13-th Freak. I am currently awaiting approval from the board admin to be able to post. Until then, to speed things up, i have asked Toppy to post this. So, without further ado, here is my story:

After having had a conversation with Mytzu on messenger about the possible location of the Mamaia airfield i decided that i should look into it once i get to Constanta. When i got here i showed my father the sattelite map with the location Mytzu first thought to be it, resembling a race track. He said that there is only a Children Summer Camp there (http://www.d13-th.com/user/freak/0113_0000.jpg and http://www.d13-th.com/user/freak/0113_0001.jpg). Then i read on this forum about the other possible location Carol pointed and showed the new finding to my dad. After some talks we decided to go there the next day and see if we can find anything that would suggest the airfield to be there.

Next there's a compilation of some of the pics i took there and also a zoomed map of the area with the numbering of the photo and the direction i was facing when i took it plus some comments on each. Here is the map: http://www.d13-th.com/user/freak/mamaia-map.jpg

-#1: http://www.d13-th.com/user/freak/0113_0003.jpg - on the right, near my dad's head you can see a part of #5 where we first began our search for possible airfield locations.
-#2: http://www.d13-th.com/user/freak/0113_0004.jpg - a closer shot of #5
-#3: http://www.d13-th.com/user/freak/0113_0007.jpg - some sort of passage that linked #4 and #5 areas
-#4: http://www.d13-th.com/user/freak/0113_0008.jpg
-#5: http://www.d13-th.com/user/freak/0113_0009.jpg - after seeing both #4 and #5 i excluded them from being part of the airfield.
-#6: http://www.d13-th.com/user/freak/0113_0010.jpg - my father searching for some possible remains from the '40's. Heh, the only old thing he found was a plastic cover from a 1981 Mercedes Benz.
-#7: http://www.d13-th.com/user/freak/0113_0011.jpg - this is where the grey line from the sattelite view is and a very good choice for an airfield (which was again not the right one it seems lol)
-#8: http://www.d13-th.com/user/freak/0113_0012.jpg - there just had to be a pic of me too hehe
-#9: http://www.d13-th.com/user/freak/0113_0017.jpg - on our way back to the car we met a man who told us that his mom lived there in the '40's and she had told him about these hangars. You can see that there are two of them, just like Denes said in the german description. The building on the right is made out of metal so it's very possible it was added during the communist regime.

I hope i didn't scare you with the size of this post and also i hope you will find some of the information in here useful.

'Freak', I think you nailed them, as the hangars look indeed as old, W.W. 2-era buildings. Now where are these hangars located on the satellite map?

Here's an approximate selection of the hangars.

Take a look on Mytzu's map. On the side of the possible location of the airfield (the yellow rectangle) there is a spot marked "HANGARE".

I didn't find the specs. in the German documents about the seaport on Siutghiol Lake, but I found one, which I dedicate to our 'Carol I.' wink.gif :
QUOTE
Landeplatz Carol I. 30 km NW Konstanza, 1 km NW Carol I., 1200 m x 1000 m
.
Quite a large runway. Would this be the same with Palas-Constanta?

Thanks for the dedication Dénes wink.gif . Here is the possible location of the airfield you mentioned, 35 km NW from Constanţa. Constanţa International airport seen on the right is only 25 km from the city.

Today was not a good day for taking pictures. I've been today all around Constanta helping my dad with work and even up to The Danube Delta and only just arrived from there. But he said he knows where those "hydro" hangars may be. Also on our way North of Dobrogea i've seen some strange hangar-like buildings with a semi-circle shaped rooftop. My father said these are most likely to be older than 40 years, as most of the recent rooftops are triangle shaped or just plain flat. I'll take some pics next time i pass there and that would be wednesday, when we go to the Delta again.
