After reading the book "Escadrila 52" I became curious about the location of Mamaia airfield, from the book I understand that the airfield was EXREMLY close to the beach and the sea, but by looking at a map of Mamaia, I wonder what could it location be... maybe in the north where we see thoe tracks.

C-2 can you tell me where did you find that satellite picture?
I once found a satellite picture of a US city and scrolled on the map towards Romania, but it seemed blank (only relief, no high-res pictures of a city or anything like that). Do you know if there are good satellite pictures of romanian cities out there? thanx -------------------- I

I am also verry curious about the location of that aifield, i don't think is the today Kogalniceanu.
Imperialist, the best satelite images whit Romania are from Google maps, search on google "google maps", only Timisoara is in Hi-Res. And also is picture you can find on Dc++ on romanian hubs whit the Bucharest, verry larg, is 200mb jpg. You can see the cars on the streets, just like you can see Timisoara on google maps This post has been edited by cipiamon on July 10, 2005 10:36 pm |

Try to find 'Tataia' airfield as well, mentioned in an eralier thread (incl. a photo that shows a German Ju 52, said to be photographed on this very airfield).

my grandfather was at the AA on airfield at Tataia where were the Hurricans. Tataia is at the north of Mamaia.

I think Tataia was South of Mamaia, at least that's what my grandmother claims (she lived in Constanta during the war).

That is correct: south of Mamaia, in the northern part of Constanta. Today Tataia is part oincluded in Constanta. Tataia Beach is in the area of the Ion Ratiu Street. I used to go to a host in the area in the early 90s. I don't think the airfield or its traces still exists today, as the area was built up during Communist years. |

Thank you cipiamon, now it works! My mistake was that I was searching for those pictures at the images section, when I should have typed what you said in the normal search mode. Thanx! -------------------- I

Aparently Toppy made a brakethrough - the yellow dot is the Mamaia Airfield:

assumimng this map is somewhat correct:
it looks like it's on the northern shore of the Siut-Ghiol river. Now there are 2 things that puzzle me: 1. It is closer to either Navodari or Ovidiu, thus i can't figure why it was called "Mamaia" and not "Navodari or "Ovidiu". 2. Near the airfield there is something marked with triangle (the red one in the pic above). I can onlly assume what it means: I know that for some time, the planes in various (all?) SchlachtGeschwaders used to wear a black triangle on the fusselage. I can't remember when they stopped this practice, and, considering the map is from 1943, i don't think it might have any connection.... Any ideeas would be apreciated, especialy in figuring out what the legend on the pic is trying to say. |

It could be the strip shown by the yellow arrow on the image below.
The red arrow shows the location of the village of Mamaia which seems quite close to the strip. |

Well, the strip does not appear on a Space Imaging satellite image taken a few years ago.

at least it makes sense to be on the northern part of the lake.
