Apparently, pilot Paul Magâlea had climbed the army hierarchy rather fast.
He was soldat (Private) when received his pilot's licence in June 1915, then sergent (Sergeant) in Sept. 1916, and plutonier (Warrant Officer) in October 1917. Certainly he was promoted to officer shortly after the Great War, because he indeed received the 'Mihai Viteazul' Order, IIIrd Class [source: Anuarul Ordinului militar Mihai Viteazul, 1916-1920, p. 123].
