In the Costescu photo, he is wearing a 3rd class Imperial Russian Order of Saint Stanislav with swords. He may have received this order during the Russo-Turkish War as he also wears the following medals : Russo-Turkish War campaign medal gold gilt, Defenders of Independence, Virtutea Militara, and the Crossing of the Danube Cross. My dates on the original photo were wrong. Under a magnifier, I can see that his medal bar is much earlier placing him about 1910-1914 judging by the age of the photo.

Can you read the first initial in the signature of the foto ? I think it may be the letter "S".

The first initial could also be an "N".

I thought i should take advantage of the knowledge of some of our members and find more about some pictures in my collection.

This guy seems to have the Russian order of St. George, 4th class. Any idea who he might be? The pic was taken in Botosani. I found only one soldier from a Botosani-based unit that was awarded with the Order of St. George during the Independence War: sgt. Ioan Bunea from the 7th Calarasi Regiment.

But his uniform seems to be a "dorobanti" parade uniform. Any ideas?

This soldier has the number "9" on his chapel. Was he from the 9th Regiment?

Also, what is his rank and what period is this photo from?

Same questions about the man in this photo. He has "311" or "31I" (31th Infantry Regiment?) on his collar.

If he was a sergeant during the 1877-8 war, then he was definitely not wearing the Russian Order of St. George. Most likely it is the Cross of St. George, as the order was reserved to officers. See Awards to Romanian soldiers for some details.

(I´m refering to the photo with the soldier standing alone and with the clouds on the background, sorry, I don´t know how to integrate the photo here)

I´ve got a very similar photo with almost the same background and uniform and it dates back to 1917.

What I am interested in is what kind of uniform it was, in which part of the army did he serve?

Regards

Why? They obviously are not generals.

What if this isnt a soldier at all, and the photographer offered the uniform and the fake background set to anybody interested in having a funny photo from the "war"?

Nothing whatsoever as Jivana is interested in identifying and dating the uniform worn by the person in the photo (be it a real or a fake soldier). wink.gif

I wonder whether PHOTO PORTAITS - War of Independence would not have been a better choice for these particular photos.

Well the photo I have is from one of my ancestors, and it really has got the year 1917 handwritten and his personal handwritten signature with the same ink on the back side. So from the date it is surely original. And so I think this here presented picture is also old, from the time of ww1. (well, it could be a new developed copy of the original). The rest is identical. Also the form of the beard of the two men is identic.

Between the picture I have at home and the posted picture are two differences: the jacket of the soldier here has got 6 bottoms while the jacket in my picture has got 4, but they could be hidden by the belt. The second difference is the berret/ hat (?), both have the same form, but there is a difference in the colouring.

On the other hand I really don´t know if it is a uniform or if the man was dressed like this just for the picture. Therefore I asked if someone could identify the uniform.

To Carol I: I also would have put this post also in another thread (for instance in "identifying people, uniforms, ranks etc." or "unidentified personal photos" or something similar). I agree with other posts: this man for sure is not a general.

Greetings
