i have some large scale maps of Romania in WW I and have begun an attempt to locate movements of each Romanian unit from airfield to airfield and the precise dates of each move. perhaps some of you may be able to help me clarify details and/or correct my mistakes. there is some confusion with designations in the earlier period of the war August - December 1916. perhaps those can be better calrified. please note that the dates i have listed are by the new style calendar. please indicate which calendar you are using when you respond. i'll begin with Grupul I Farman Escadrilla: 28 August 1916 at Pipera, operated with 1st Army; 27 October 1916 moved to Ciulnita and renamed as ESC.F.5; during October a dtachment was based at Craiova; 13 November 1916 unit moved to Craiova; fate of unit is unknown.
Grupul II formed 28 August 1916 at Brasov with ESC.F.2; 28 September 1816 unit moved to Baicoi; 15 October detachment at Cimpulng-Muscel; 20 December 1916 both sections moved to Pufesti with a section at Racacuini. in the new post i will address ESC.F.1, ESC.F.2, ESC.V.3. over time i hope to address all units. your kind assistance is very much appreciated. thank you. august |

That's impossible, as Rumania's declared war on Austria-Hungary on 28 August 1916 and as Brasov was in Transylvania, back then part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Gen. Dénes |

i feel it is fruitless to pursue this thread about Romanian airfields. it is evidently not a topic of much interest to the members. august

As far as I know, there is no-one visiting this forum, who is intricately interested in W.W. 1-era aviation.

I will forward your message about airfield and units location to WWI romanian aviation fan, Razvan Bujor. He doesn't have internet so i will give him a print with your request. Cheers. PS : "Crucile Negre" is on the way to your adress. Mayby you will find in the book the answers (if you know romanian language ) |

Hello Cantacuzino, thank you very much for your kind help. perhaps with the assistance of your friend Razvan Bujor, combined with details from the book by Valeriu Avram, i will be able to answer many of the questions about airfields. if so i will be happy to share them with the group. judging from the 93 replies on the subject of Romanian WW I aces i had assumed, perhaps wrongly, that there was considerable interest in the WW I period. Cantacuzno please send me Mr. Bujor's address and i can mail my entire draft airfield list directly to him. thank you again. best wishes, august

Following the reorganization during the winter of 1916/17, the Romanian units were deployed in the following manner:
-1st Air Group (subordinated to the 3rd Army): Farman 2 and 6 and Nieuport 1 Squadrons on the Racaciuni airfield -2nd Air Group (subordinated to the Russian 4th Army): Farman 4 and Nieuport 3 Squadrons on the Tecuci airfield -3rd Air Group (subordinated to the Russian 6th Army): Farman 5 and Nieuport 10 Squadrons on the Galati airfield The General HQ had at its disposal the Farman 7 Squadron on the Tecuci airfield and the B. M. 8 Squadron at Galati. On 28 June/9 July 1917, the 2nd Air Group is reported as deployed on two airfields in support of thh 1st Army's offensive at Marasti: the Farman 7 and 9 Squadrons of the Calamatui airfield and the Nieuport 3 and 11 Squadrons on the Cioara airfield. |

Hello Victor, thank you very much for your response. the 1st Air Group was with the 2nd Army (not 3rd). everything else confirms what i have and with a date of 31 December 1916 (n.s). with assistance from others like yourself i hope to better define the movement of air units. i am still trying to confirm where ESC.F.2 was first formed. cheers, august
