Hallo Gents,
spotted this "old bird" today and got the chance to make some pictures. I was also wondering does anybody know if it has a history, or involvment with the military. I believe the Russians built them under license during W.W.2 as well as using American produced models. Kevin in Deva This post has been edited by New Connaught Ranger on August 06, 2007 04:43 pm |

With so many variations and copies of the DC-3/C-47 made, its almost impossible to tell unless you know the history of the airframe or have a serial number to track. But the Russian Li-2s usually had a turret on the top and gunports on the side, so my guess would be a US or UK vintage one.

The civilian version of the Li-2 did not have a turret. I think the chances that this is one of the 2 DC-3s bougt by Romania prior to WW2 and not one of the many Li-2s bought after WW2 are slim. My guess is a Li-2. |

Ah, I didn't know they made a civilian version. But it seems everyone did, so I'm not surprised. Even the Japanese had a version.

That would be a nice addition to the Aviation Museum.

Judging by the engine cowls, it is a Lisunov Li2. On the DC3, the engine cowls taper gently towards the front, whereas the engine cowls on the Li2 are cylindrical.
The Li2 used the Shvetsov ASh-62IR engines, the same as the engines of the An2. Also the exhausts arrangement are typical for Li2. Most likely, this is an ex-Tarom plane. Radu |

Kevin, exactly in what village is it located?
I remember seeing it a few years ago when going to Timisoara, but I had no time to stop and no camera |

Sorry for my late reply been on the road, yes its located on the Deva side of Faget on the way to Lugos.
The first time I saw it back in 2000 it was painted in a red Coca Cola scheme. Kevin in Deva. |

I remember I was in a Li-2 in the 80`s , it wass still a cafe then, during a highschool trip in the area. But I don`t remember the neighborhood looking like this. Is my memory fainted or the plane was moved? Ore there are more of them

Hallo Hadrian
I have heard, in the last few days from a friend there might be a second one in the area but I have forgotten where he said it was , (old age??) I will find out over the weekend and post it here. I too thought this one was further out in the countryside (towards the Deva side of Faget) when it was painted red, I saw it from the bus returning to Germany after a visit to Deva in 2001.
