In the old pictures (1912-1913) the hangars at Cotroceni in elevation look triangular shape, not like this arcade shape. The runway was at north, or down the valley?

Ofcourse the old hangars (1912-1913) were changed in late '30 with the new ASAM hangars used mostly for repair. Today the remains are from one of ASAM Cotroceni hangars ( as Victor mentioned).

...but I would like to know more about Giulesti airfield - it is the first time I hear about it.

Here is how the airfield's location is described in a wartime German document:
"10 km NW Stadtmitte Bukarest, W Giulesti.
1100 x 900 m, für He 111.
3 Hallen, Barackenlager für 1270 Mann."

The same German document mentions two other airfelds around Bucharest, too:
Otopeni (10 km N Bucharest),
Tunari (12 km NO Bucharest).

It would be nice to pinpoint each of the seven airfields' exact location on a larger Google map, showing Bucharest and surroundings.

Tunari was an dispersion terrain, some times used for training(circuits),no facilities.

QUOTE (cipiamon @ Nov 10 2005, 03:44 AM)
After i heard some stories about Cotroceni aifield i asked Cantacuzino about the location of the aifield,  he pointed me the location and the fact that there are many older buildings there. I took my byke and found the remains of a hangar!
This is at Razoare behind the old buildings there, now is serving as a garden...

Let's hope he's gonna be there for a long time!

nice pics......they are art, imo.....in the way the low sunlight washes on the old hanger, and the overgrowth of vegetation.

I wonder if u saw the photo book; One last look : a sentimental journey to the Eighth Air Force heavy bomber bases of World War II in England
by Philip Kaplan, Rex Alan Smith (Hardcover - September 1986)

It's a large format color photo "coffee table" book, comprised of photos of now derelict US 8th AF bases in rural England. Many of the buildings still stand, but in similar condition to the hanger you photographed, in in similar style. The effect is like your pics, very nostalgic.

(btw; "byke" = bicycle or mc? just curious....seemed like I saw lots of the latter, few of the former in Bucharest) cheers.
