A book of mine shows a picture of a Stuka with a yellow star on it's wings and body and it's dated 1942 - someone said that Stukas..we recieved them in 1943? Who is right, who is wrong?
-The second question...did the Romanian airforce bomb Sevastopol in 1942, or later in the War..in 1944? I heard rumos that my deceased grandfather bombed Sevastopol, but that's about all i know.. I hear he was also in the battle for Odessa...so what units (and planes types) were in the Odessa battle?..(Bombers).. So, here you go...3 questions in one...help me thanks :!: |

First, the yellow star was not the symbol of ARR. It was the Michael Cross.
ARR received its first Ju-87s 1943 and were all initially assigned to the 3rd Dive Bomber Group, which started operations in June. Second, no ARR bomber or fighter units were assigned to Fliegerkorps VIII in 1942. In fact the Romanian bombers did not make any combat sorties between 16 October 1941 and September 1942. The city your grand father bombed could have been Stalingrad. Third, the bombers units engaged at Odessa in 1941 were: - 1st Bomber Group: 71st and 72nd Bomber Squadron (S-79B) - 2nd Bomber Group: 74th Bomber Squadron (Potez 633B2) and 75th Bomber Squadron (JRS-79B) - 4th Bomber Group: 76th and 77th Bomber Squadron (P.37) - 5th Bomber Group: 78th, 79th and 80th Bomber Squadron (He-111H-3) - 6th Bomber Group: 18th Light Bomber Squadron (IAR-37) and 73rd Bomber Squadron (P.23B) - 82nd Bomber Squadron (MB-210) |

How effective was the armored platings of the Stuka plane? Anyone heard something about that? For sure, they confonted with a lot of small caliber projectiles, so how good was the shields of this plane?

About the bombing of Odessa: didn't the book about IAR-80 say that Odessa was the first combat test of the IAR-81 dive-bomber version? Is it true? If yes, to which unit did those first IAR-81 belong?
Thanks in advance for any replies. |
