Adj. stag. Niculae (perhaps Ioan) Borhotea crashed with '211' at Damaroaia, SW of the railway lines, due to piloting error, on 12 July 1944. The 'Gustav' broke up in three pieces. Subsequently, he was relegated to the on-board observer role, as punishment.
'211' was an I.A.R.-assembled machine. Gen. Dénes This post has been edited by Dénes on December 19, 2005 01:13 pm |

On that day ( 12 july'44) three Bf 109 G from 7thFG were suppose to make a low altitude pass over the airfield ( probably Baneasa ) for a propaganda movie shots ( Jurnal de razboi). The three pilots ( including Borhotea and Stinghe Dragos) were passed so low that all officials, cameraman and Lt Dicezare ( sq leader) had to lay down. At the end of the runaway Borhotea Bf 109 engine stop ( as Stinghe Dragos recall) and was forced to land straight ahead in a backyard house ( in Damaroaia district ) some say the (back garden) toilett disaperead under Messerschmitss wrecks. Borhotea ( unhurt) was dressed only with short trousers ( hot summer) and was refused by Dicezare (after radio call) for back transport help. He found a tricolor band and wrapped around one arm. He start running (back to airfield) like in a cross competition to save the appereance an avoid people laughing of him ( half naked). On 22 july '44 Sgt Borhotea was flying at low altitude with a Fleet biplane from Pipera to Buzau when was jumped near Ramnicu Sarat by a P-38 Lightning. For american pilot the small biplane looks easy victory but Borhotea was not agree with that. First time the american pilot overpass (at higher speed) the slow biplane without chance to shoot him. Borhotea understand that he will not have the same luck second time. Looking around he saw his salvation. A building big enough "a silo" ( cereal storage tanks) for protecting Borhotea who start making tight turns around this silo. American pilot had to give up (because of P-38 low speed limits compare to Fleet) and leave the area. Borhotea died later after the war in a stupid accident with an An-2 biplane.
