Does anyone know of Axis badges issued for the Stalingrad battle ? I know the Croats had such a badge, I also found 1 picture of a german Stalingrad badge (but I don't know if it is a fake or it really existed) and I also found (in this forum) a romanian bar for Stalingrad but not a badge.

The Romanian bar/rod was for the Crusade against Communism medal.
The Croat badge you mention, may not have been Croat, but German and was very likely issued to the surviving Croat volunteers of the 369th Reinforced Regiment. This unit served with the 100th Jaeger Division and was part of the German Army, being equipped and supplied by it (similarly to the Spanish 250th Azul Division). The 369th Regiment saw intensive action inside Stalingrad prior to Operation Uranus, unlike Romanians. |

Thank you Victor, so romanians did not issue a specific badge for those who served at Stalingrad, only a bar to be added to an already existing badge.
Here is what I found for the germans (it is not exactly a badge but a cross): http://www.classicfirearms.co.uk/stalingradcross.html I also found this which has same shape as Kuban/Crimea badges, but I only found it in 1 place - I am not sure it isn't a fake since so far I did not come across any Stalingrad Badge issued by the germans: This post has been edited by D13-th_Mytzu on December 28, 2005 09:07 am |

The stalingrad cross you posted, which I believe it's a fake, it's a shoulderboard device for the 134 Infantry Reg. Hoch u. Deutschmeister.
Here is a picture of one posted by Dave Suter on wehrmacht-awards.com The arm shield it's a fantasy item. -------------------- ~

This piece looks typical of grave dug items coming out of Russia. |

It looks typical, so the fakers did a good job on ageing it. It's a fantasy piece, the germans never produced it. Here is what it looks like: -------------------- ~

There is no official Axis award for the Stalingrad campaign, except for the Romanian Crusade medal with "Stalingrad" bar (but the Soviets have a medal for "Defense of Stalingrad").
The cross is probably a private-made piece. There was a project for a Stalingrad shield, but was never produced (photo from Wehrmacht Awards): The other shield design is just a fantasy piece. |
