Not much ... except that empty mine I've posted at the beginning of the thread. There were a lot of rags and some documents (mainly inventory lists) , lots of empty bottles, a couple of pieces of furniture and that was all ... The place was "cleaned" pretty well. As you can imagine we've looked for old pieces of equipment, spent cartidges, and so on... but we didn't find any... You said that you found the items you posted in scrapyards... what scrapyards ? - the helmets in particular look nice .. This post has been edited by Von Maybach on January 06, 2006 10:43 am |

This is a Russian type booby trap. There is a big stick in the bottom that goes into the ground with a fuze out of the top with a trip wire normally attached.

Here in Constanta there are a lot of scrapyards. There are little centers that collect the iron and then they sell them to firms that export the iron. In the harbour here in Constanta there are a lot of things but they don't let you go and search. Someone told me that there was a mountain af helmets and other pieces of equioment in the harbour, but you are not allowed to enter.

Well, I know of at least 3 ways to go in the Constanta Habour without passing by the gate- One is by clambering over the seawall that starts from Vraja Marii and goes to the Military Harbour - there is a small parking there, out of view from the actual gate, and acess to the wall is pretty easy eventhough they have placed a chainlink fence there to stop "intruders" - I used this entrance hundreds of times.
Another would be by the abandoned railway tunnel that starts near "Podul cu Butelii" overpass (you can see it as a "valley" in between the main railway tracks) and ends just underneath Poarta 6. I wouldn't go this way though- it's dark, damp and very unstable (That's why it was abandoned in the first place, part of it has collapsed) Also, you might run into dogs or hobos, a situation I would gladly avoid. I used this entrance only once, a few years ago, and I don't want to go that way ever again. A third way would be underneath any of the overpasses at Porta 2 and 3. There are some railway lines there, as well as some semi-abandoned military buildings in the case of Poarta 3. Pelase note that the risk of getting caught is quite substantial if you choose to go this way. Once inside the harbour, act natural. If questioned at all about your business, be evasive, but act as if you are there with an actual purpose, and state any of the official gates as your point of entry (Most likely, everybody will just asume you entered legally if you are seen strolling inside, so that line of "questioning" is unlikely to arise-it only happened to me once or twice in 15 years) Keep clear of guards, and avoid doing anything suspicious. Also, Don't try to gain acess into the Military Harbour itself- you can see all the proceedings quite nicely from outside the fence, that is only about half a meter in height on the outside, while a full 2 meters on the inside. Of course, there is always the posibility of "legal entry" under the pretense of wanting to visit the Museum at Cuibul Reginei, and while that will always get you in, it's no fun without some "breaking and entering*", is it? *Dislaimer: If you try any of the above and end up in police custody, don't try to blame it on me. Anyway, if you are caught in the act, you only risk a fine from 300 to 500 Ron (3-5,000,000 Rol) and most of the time you can talk your way out of it- The only time I got caught sneaking in was at a rock concert, and I managed to bargain with them to charge me for Unlawful Conduct instead (the fine is only 100RON). Also, be advised that while you are required to identify yourself, it's illegal for the policemen to actually search you. Of course, usually only the name and adress suffice for a positive identification, even if you don't know your CNP or ID card serial and number - they have one hell of a database! Also...there isn't that much to do in the harbour anyway, except to watch for ships and people, and hang out by the old silos (they were designed by Anghel Saligni, the guy that built the bridges over the Danube at Cernavoda and Fetesti). The stacks of "fiare vechi" are just along the previously mentioned seawall, and strech for the better part of it. They are interesting to look at, but don't think you will be able to find anything useful- most are big pieces, like parts of old ships. household appliances, car wrecks, the ocassional locomotive boiler- this kind of stuff. I've never seen a pile made up of old helmets, neither have I seen any militaria in any of my wanderings in the area. Also, sometimes you can see the odd gypsy(or as much as a whole clan) scouring trough the heaps of metal, so assume thay have allready took anything worthwile and melted it into pots. I didn't paid for them. The person wanted flowers and my mother has a lot, I did want to pay some money but the person refused and said that she want's only flowers. The ATI 72 is complete and the ATI 52 is missing the receiver. When I got them they were covered in mud and very dirty, but I desmembered them and cleaned every piece. Noew they look great. No the face mask isn't black it's grey. |
