QUOTE (Kepi @ Jan 11 2006, 05:24 PM)
Professor Cornel Andonie, the Museum specialist in orders and medals, said that at the inauguration of the Contemporary exhibition (November 2003) he tried to put all the important  orders of the Museum collections on the kings Ferdinand and Carol  II tunics. After one year, the specialists on artifacts preservation saw that the weight of the orders plates affected the tissue of the 70-80 years old tunics , and some of the neck chains (“colan”) were too heavy and their links had deformed. They decided to remove these artifacts from the display and store them in the Museum storerooms. Of course, this affected the image of these uniforms but the restorers and preservation specialists always prevail in a Museum.

I think a better idea would have been to attempt to recreate the appearance of the uniforms in known or official photos. Of course the age of the cloth would still be a problem. Maybe the solution would be a modern, but high quality replica. Though, I am not a museum expert so I do not know what are the modern principles of public displays of collection items.

GREAT PICTURES GUYS, biggrin.gif you don’t get the same idea of the decorations from old newspaper pictures, I have one picture of King Ferdinand, (Framed Black & White Photo), given as a Prize in school, showing him wearing a lot of Romanian Orders, Decorations and the Russian Cross of the Order of Saint George, French Croix de Guerre with mention in dispatches device on the ribbon, The Italian Croce Di GUERRA and the Romanian War Cross, (with these awards it has to be post World War 1).

Kepi, do you know which of the awards of the kings are missing from the collection? There is an entry in Carol II's journal that mentions some awards were already missing in 1938:

(12 August 1938) - "After lunch, i put some order in the awards left from my parents. Those of my mother are complete, most of my father's are present. Those of King Carol and Queen Elisabeth are mostly missing, even if the most interesting ones remained."
