Yes, it's an Alouette II. AFAIK, there were 2 in Rumanian service. Ceausescu had one. This could probably be that one.

Any idea when did that happen and where? and what was the cause of the crash exactly? I heard a rumor that Ceausescu refused to fly on this particular type (probably because it looked too fragile). Is there any truth to that? This post has been edited by Zapacitu on December 02, 2007 03:23 pm |

There were more than 2 Allouette II in Ro. I can not recall exactly, most likely around 4 if not 6. They entered in Ro inventory sometimes mid or in the second half of the sixties. They flew with RoAF and Special Aviation Unit of the Ro Ministry of Interior. I can not say when they've been withdrawn from service (mid seventies, maybe) but in the eighties none was flying anymore.
I can not comment on the rumor reproduced by Zapacitu. What I can say is that it is in every VIP organization practice to avoid flying single engined aircraft (either fixed or rotary wing). Ro was no exception. Sorin |

I talked yesterday to a former pilot of ceausescu.
He said that he did flew the Alu. till 74,75 ,when he got his Dauphine. I also asked about the one/two eng. question.He said that it is forbiden for single eng aicrafts to fly over crowded aries. |

While "'74-'75" confirms my recollection (in my original message I indicated "mid seventies"), I'm not buying the other answer.
The reason the VIP flights (or if you want DIE flights [De Importanta Exceptionala= Of Exceptionally Importance]) were not performed in single engined aircraft (be it fixed or rotary wing), was not the concern regarding the overflown areas. The reason was that a multi-engined aircraft provided a better margin of safety in the unlikely event of o propulsion problem. There was/is a restriction to fly over crowded areas for all aircraft (some areas are forbidden to be overflown at all, while for other areas there's an AGL limitation), however at times not one, but formations of MiGs and IAR-316Bs (Allouettes) were low passing over crowded areas, including over Mr. C. The situation to be avoided was to have him in a single engine aircraft in the air, not on the ground under a flying single engined aircraft or aircraft formation. And about Dauphine, it was not one, there were four (201-204). Sorin |

There were only two Allouette II in Romania since 1970, and Ceausescu wasn't interested to fly with this. Anyway, the white Mi 8 from the photo belonged to Ceausescu. There were, ideed, four Dauphine, and, I guess, two of them still flying with SRI pilots. The number 202 was the famous one who helped Ceausescu to left the CC building on december 22nd, 1989.

Ceaus. did use teh Alu till the Daup. came.
I know a pilot who flew him quite a lot with the Alu. |

With Allouette III a pilot had an accident, landing in water, maybe in a river.
