So what is so tragic about this. The fact that Romania will allegedly buy a submarine or that it will buy a second hand one?

LMAO! has Atanasiu gone completley out of his mind(if what it says in the article is true which I don't believe) first of all a new SSN-688 Los Angeles-class costs $900 million [1990 prices] a second hand one won't be that much cheaper with an annual operational cost of $21,000,000 in 1996 second of all I really doubt that they would sell us one even if we had the money and finally why the heck would we need a nuke sub for training our crews and.Anyway IMO the best sub for us would be a german Type 212 SSK powered by hydrogen fuel cells.ANYTHING that floats on the Black Sea this u-boot can sink it.

What is tragic is investing so much money in something completly useless - even in case of war that sub is useless - that money can be spent much better on something Romania really needs...

How much money? Nobody said anything certain about money. And nothing about the sub. No name, no face, no number. Do we need a sub? I think we do, at least 1 if Delfinul is kaput.

take care

What is tragic is the fact that this submarine will never see open seas smile.gif
If you can call Black Sea open, that is. You buy submarines when you can operate them in wide areas. And what money do we have to even mantain this monster?

What makes you so sure? Basescu isnt talking out of his own intelligence about internationalising the Black Sea, new Black Sea strategy, bla bla.

Do you actually think the americans take Basescu seriously? The US never sold SSN's to countryes like Australia and Japan who would really have uses for them, I can't possibly imagine them selling us SSNs.

AlexC, watch your language. There is no need to be so aggressive in the way you express yourself.

Myztu, a submarine is not a useless weapon for Romania. Quite the contrary. Even though we don't have a large fleet of them, they can serve the principle of the "ship in being".
